If I'm not mistaken, the shareware version contains the entire game; it just doesn't have the entire thing unlocked.

Not in the sense we think of it nowadays, no. It does have the full engine and feature set, but it has a different set of map data, based on the game's earliest levels plus a few minor details (the shareware warnings and such). You can upgrade to the full version by replacing the map pack.

This is different from the modern sense of unlocking, where the game actually has everything -map data and all- but hides some of it behind software switches. The shareware version of Quake actually lacks the data from the full game, even though the code is all in place.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
