Nicaragua has recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia becoming the fist state that backs Russia's stance on the breakaway regions.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has declared that his country fully recognizes the regions' independence, Reuters reported.

"The government of Nicaragua recognizes the independence of the republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and we fully agree with the Russian government's position that that conflict may end through dialogue with European countries," said Ortega.

Russia officially recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia last month despite warnings from western powers, saying the move was needed to protect the regions following Georgia's August 7 attack on South Ossetia.
