@Kasz: I thought this game was meant to introduce those old characters to the new players, and try to make them popular. Who knows, maybe to release games starring them in the future? I saw this as the Smash Bros of the Action Adventure genre. I thought, a mix of Nintendo characters, this could work.
But maybe you are right that there may be some jokes about some characters that many wont understand. In reality almost no one would understand everything, since the game involves a lot of franchises. Im sure Nintendo tried to expand even more their audience, and made a game with strong adult themes. In this case sex rather than blood and strong language, like weve seen in Eternal Darkness or Conkers Bad Fur Day for example.
Not everything should be directed to the younger ones. This could have been a great oportunity to get more old Nintendo fans along with new adults.
