do you realize that FF3 sold 40,000 ists first week, with the ps2's huge userbase

And you could spin it this way too. The new SC4 will outsell SC3 by a large margin regardless of a userbase roughly 10x the size.

 

 

And that's why userbase isn't too important when talking about a series. Fans will buy the game.

So the game didn't bomb. Sold exactly what it had to sell considering past games.
