  • PS2 sold 38 million software units worldwide compared to 47.2 million last year. That's a notable decrease -- PS2 users are likely beginning to migrate to either Wii, PS3, or 360, but decrease in major software titles released for the platform is also certainly a factor
  • They did not specify any individual game sales
  • Their PS3 hardware estimations until the end of the fiscal year are unchanged from their May and July forecasts -- 11 million units for the fiscal year
  • PS2 beat their hardware forecasts and sold 3.28 million units. In response, Sony has changed their PS2 hardware estimations for the fiscal year from 10 million to 12 million.

It seems IOI is relativly close on the Software sales of Mario Party 8. He has it at 2.58 Million sold.

That would mean 410 thousand in the retail channel. Thats a little high to me, but I'm impressed how close ioi is.

Sony shipped 1.31 million PS3 consoles in the quarter and posted an $841 million loss - averages out to losing $641.98 for every PS3 sold

Actually more. PS3 is the only money losing part of Sony's gaming division. PSP and PS2 likely turn a tidy profit. So, the real losses on PS3 are something more than $841 million, since that number includes PSP and PS2 profits, although we dont know how much.

Although, it's difficult to say exactly how much Sony is losing per PS3, since they could be doing crazy financial things like "amortizing PS3 R&D", and I believe a manufactored PS3 goes on the balance sheet immediatly where the sale could take some time,. But suffice to say, it's a shedload.

Well, the question is there also how much they loose on software: Developing it cost money, lots of it. How many games Sony has in their pipeline that arn't release yet?

"Nintendo expects to ship 10.1 million Wiis between October and March"

Interesting info!

Predicted Breakdown:

October: 1.1m
November: 2.0m
December: 3.5m
January: 1.1m
February: 1.2m
March: 1.2m

Will be interesting to see how things turn out.

PS - Thanks for the info, I likely would have missed this one.

Actually, Nintendo shipped 13.17 million through Sept 30.  Vgchartz had Wii at 12.05 million.

Thats a 91% Sold:Shipped ratio

I had predicted the following shipped numbers for the big three through Sept 30 2007:

Wii - 13.4/ actual 13.17

PS3 - 5.60/ actual 5.59

360 - 12.9/ actual (we'll know in about 6 hours)

If you add the 5.8 million shipped through March 31 2007 to the projected 17.5 million shipped from Apr 1 2007 to March 31 2008

it means Nintendo will end up with 23.3 million Wiis shipped worldwide by March 31 2008.  With a 90% sell through ratio, that would mean 21 million units sold to gamers.  Both numbers will be higher than lifetime sales.

Since all three consoles have been out here are shipped total in three month intervals:

ConsoleDec 06'March 2007'June 2007'Sept 2007'
Nintendo Wii3.195.849.2713.17
Xbox 36010.410.911.6
Playstation 31.663.574.285.59

Again, I think Microsoft's number for Sept 2007 (shipped) will be ~12.9 million given the availability of 360 and the fact that Halo 3 was only available for one week in this period, preventing dramatic overshipping.  If Microsoft does announce a number under 13.17 million Nintendo will probably be comfortable in declaring they have taken the world wide lead, since they have put out more units in less time at a cheaper price.

For those curious, here are my projected December 2007 shipment totals (Wii/360/PS3):

Dec 2007'
20.5
17
8.75

Very true. I think Killzone 2 is very expensive, I read that there have been hundreds of developers working on it in the Netherlands for a long time.

I imagine software is really the main contributor to Sony\'s PS3 problems. You can sell a console at a loss if you make up for it in software sales, but when those are abysmal, as well, you end up with a moneysink that is difficult to climb out of. Ballooning development costs are just one part of the story.

It's true that first party development costs hurt (Lair has probably lost them 15-20 million dollars at this point), but perhaps paltry royalties from poorly selling third party titles is the real issue.

@TheSource,

Don't you think the sold vs shipped ratio will change a bit over the holidays? It seems like it could go up a bit with the huge influx of new Wii buyers. Hell new 360 and PS3 buyers too. And since nearly half of all game sales are in Q3 it seems likely that it should have a big impact on those numbers.

I don't think Wii will see 98/99% sellthrough but I think it could see as high as 95%, especially when you consider that when we are talking about these numbers the amount of units "in the pipe" so to speak stays relatively the same while the LTD continues to increase.

Whats your thoughts on those factors?
