Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy dominating home console RPG. Fair or Not Fair

they always raise the bar.

i love companies that expend 30-40 million to do it.

though if other companies do it too i would support it.

atlus it's quite taken a hit, persona it's a long game and isn't that expensive.

fair. All their games have really high quality production and direction. These sales are indicative of consumer response. The consumers decided FF was a great brand, and the iterations which have been classically described as below expectations have sold fewer copies.

So you would rather have one questonable RPG every five years that muscles out many other RPG's or a steady stream of RPG's?

If those steady streams are like Lost Oddesy's & Tales Of Vesperia's FINE

if they are like Infinite Undiscovery's, last remnants, esternal sonata's bla bla bla

HELL no!

We already get atleast ONE great JRPG a year, I don't see how S-E reducing FF's budget will lead to all those other devs makig mediocre JRPG's suddenly making good ones.

Its not S-E's fault other JRPG devs don't have the "guts" or will to market JRPG's to the west, SEGA has finally taken up the task, but tell me who else really did?

@Kenryoku

How?

What titles have been selling less & less after FF7?

So you're saying you're fine with missing out on the RPG equivalent Braid, Portal, and Bioshock?

These are consumer electronics... Every sales they get is fair... you could argue that it deserved more but not that it should have been more. Square Enix where able to make a franchise that's seen as the "Quality" RPG series on home consoles. Sure, there might be other games around that are better, and perhaps deserve to sell more, but Square did what they had to do sell their games. Ensure that when people hear "Final Fantasy" they think "Good".

Indeed, and that's their true mark on the industry.  Final Fantasy is a series about being noticed.  Even the series creator stated that was its purpose from the start.  A series about focusing on story and imitating the 'cenematic feel' of movies.  And seeing as how the first game was trying to revive a dying company, its only natural that it was made to gain attention, especially in a market with stiff competition from games like Dragon Quest and Phantasy Star.

In the end, Final Fantasy's major draw has always been about having the best graphics and the most marketing.  That's how it cornered its market and became the most popular JRPG in America.  It just so happens that this system is perfect for selling games in America.  In Japan however, a few other RPGs have made a bigger impact.

yes 2 others.....DQ & pokemon

Exactly.  The series which have much larger and consistent sales in Japan.  Whereas the sales for Final Fantasy as a series has gottel less over the years by comparison.

By all accounts, what has generated the larger amount of sales for Final Fantasy has been the sales internationally (especially America).  And that isn't such a sure thing anymore.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I just don't like the fact that SE doesn't make as many JRPGs as before (or well Square and Enix individualy). I mean on PS1, we had FF, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, SaGa Frontier, FF Tactics, Legend of Mana and Xenogears from Square and Dragon Quest VII, Star Ocean 2, Valkyrie Profile from Enix.
Next generation we still got FFs, Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Unlimited SaGa, Romancing SaGa, a Mana game, Radiata Stories, Kingdom Hearts.

Now we have what... Star Ocean 4, and thats about it. Then Dragon Quest X + FF XIII (and versus) coming, and thats about it for now...

I really, really hate these threads. They imply that this distinction has not been justly earned.

Final Fantasy games sell well because they pretty much ARE all great games. It's kind of a naive viewpoint to say "Its not fair that Tales.." only sold this much and "well Persona only sold".. bla bla.

Much like Mario, Halo, Dragon Quest, Zelda, and several other franchises, FF earned this right.

Since FFVII they constantly try to push the JRPG genre into blockbuster and mass appeal territory. I'm no fan of this.

Also, Atlus and Shin Megami Tensei series is vastly superior to Final Fantasy.

Dragon Quest Swords, both FFCC WiiWare titles, Crystal Defenders, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Crisis Core, all of the DS spin offs and remakes, etc. There is more than you're suggesting.

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

On-rails rpg, 2 WiiWare titles, Tower Defense, Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant are both rather bad. And I didn't mean handhelds, they are doing fine there.

Are you purposely ignoring the fact that Square Enix made a dynamic shift to handheld RPGs to bitch that they aren't supporting the genre any longer? I can damn near guarantee there will be more JRPG releases from Square this generation than any other in their history.
