Forums - Sales Discussion - When will PS3 lose its momentum?!

Soulxxx said: ... Bolded - things you got wrong.
Really? How so? 1. Per month sales in Japan and the US have been tracking downwards every month since launch... right? Hence no momentum? Sure there was Musou, but that is a "blip". 2. Sure, matter of opinion - but if you set a "public" poll, or asked media outlets - no question what is winning. Sales show that too. But feel free to disagree. 3. PS3 - VF, Motorstorm, Gundam, Musou, Ridge Racer... plus Resistance, GT (free download!), Oblivion (soon), etc. Wii - Zelda (GC port).... WarioWare? Fire Emblem (niche following?). Feel free to disagree, but based on "known" IPs, the PS3 has had a much stronger release/hit schedule to date. Pokemon out to date only in Japan, and that's only a "shell" for the DS game (no single player campaign). To top this off - PS3 has online play already (a good thing!) - the Wii online is still coming. Definitely a boost once it hits.

People don't understand what Blu-Ray is, devs don't know how to fully utilize the all of the techs inside the PS3, and lastly a lot of people don't have HDTV or Broadband yet. This is why the PS3 was made for the future. For the year 2007 PS3 will slowly begin to gain momentum as blu ray becomes more established. Once Uncharted, Killzone, MGS4, Heavanly Swoard, Ratchet and Clank, Lair, Singstar, Home, and LBP start coming out sales will begin to pass Wii (360 is already getting outsold). It will also be helped buy movie sales such as Spiderman 3, Casino Royal (which along with Motorstorm will help March significantly) 300, Cars, Pirates of the Caribean, and more. Momentum will continue to rise through 08 with the Getaway, GT5, White Knight Story, FFXIII, 8 Days, and many unanonced exclusives. By dec. 08 it should be at around 300 dollars which will also help.
Sounds like the typical Sony technobabble to me. BluRay will struggle in my opinion - DVD is great, and there is NO reason for people to want to replace it with a more expensive technology. Once it comes down to $100 players, and $15 movies - maybe. Apart from higher resolution (need an expensive TV to use this as well), it has no benefits over existing tech. Most PS3 titles will fit the data within a DVD (9) disk. Two reasons - 9gig of data is HEAPS, and secondly a focus on cross-platform development will push games to fit on a 360 disk. There is no way it will drop 30%-50% in price within the first 18 months. Ironically, the only way it would do this is if Sony are doing REALLY badly with the sales in the first place. Remember that Sony are STILL losing hundreds on making each machine - even with the new hardware iteration (cheaper CPU, no emotion engine). They are just trying to trim their losses at this stage. Sony does "own" a bunch of exclusive content - and it will help a bit. Things like Sony exclusive movies, that they put out to BluRay only - but this could hurt both ways, as a low-take up of that content would hurt that brand (would Sony intentionally lose 90%+ of sales just to push BluRay?). It has to be something really significant to actually push hardware. ... Pure and simple, it comes down to "exclusive" killer games/applications. Sony had better have some real impressive games in the pipeline, or this will get real messy. MS definitely does, and the Wii has plenty coming up. I still expect Sony to be an easy "3rd" (at least in the US) this Xmas. Europe may well be the testing ground, and MS's failure in Japan makes Sony 2nd by default.

gebx said: Also KBG29 - How many of these killer PS3 apps will stay exclusives?? I know those produced by Sony will stay PS3... but the others? If anything, the 360 (and the Wii) are the only systems that can promise to deliver third party exclusives... so don't count your chicks before they hatch ( or is it chickens? or did I completly screw that up?)
uhh, why are 3rd party games for 360 going to remain exclusive? elder scrolls didn't remain exclusive, now did it?

1.) How many standard tv's can you find in stores? I will tell you - few models. Situation of HDTV's is very similar to the computer market. CRT monitors were cheap and superior to LCD's for long time but now CRT tech. is absolutely wiped out. How much time did it take? LCD and Plasma aren't a cosmic technology right now. You can buy pretty solid tv for around 1000$ Is it expensive? I don't think so. Especially in Japan, USA or Western Europe reality. Have you seen a single HD movie? It's like comparing poor quality 320/240 movie to the divx. Difference is enormous. 2.) Right now maybe most of titles will fit within DVD9 but this is just silly beginning. Take a look on previous generations. Recall Tekken 1 on PSX and Tekken 3 on the same platform... The quality jump was huge, same situation with Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. This generation will last 10 years. Sony is the only one who is really prepared for this. Mark my words - 10 years. Huge textures, high quality voice acting, FMV etc. Only Blu-ray will handle this. HDDVD for Xbox360 isn't a threat as long as they will assemble it to every produced unit.

That´s true but don´t forget about downloadable content: Apples iTV will probably sell better than Blu-Ray and HDDVD together - why? It´s not much more expensive and Apple can drop the price as soon as they want cause they make the money with the movies you buy. If a movie costs 15 Dollars Apple makes 15 Dollars. No prduction costs, you just put the movie to the library and wait while you get your money. Apple is the only company that can drop the prices as low as they want - Sony has to sell blu ray players at high costs cause they make the money with the players; you can´t force people to buy movies published by Sony but Apple gets the money for every movie sold on iTV even if it is from other companies - like in the videogame business. So neither blu-ray nor HD DVD will win this race. It´s downloadable content in my opinion...

@Louie Right now it is pretty difficult to download even DVD-movie. I'm using pretty comfortable 2Mbits adsl line and sorry 25 GB file is a way too much for me. I think downloadable content can't directly affect on HD market. Personally I buy only movies I really appreciate - I like an extra content, box and so on. I can download every movie right now without paying for it but I buy DVD's though.

How many standard tv's can you find in people's houses? I will tell you - a lot. You all talk about the sales of TV's and that the majority of them are HDTV's, but no one has ever thought about homes... i mean, they may sell 10 HDTV's and 5 standard TV's but how do we not know that the 10 people who bought the HDTVs doesn't also has 5 standard ones? and you said that 1000$ is not expensive but you know people have other needs too, they don't buy a TV and magically solve all their problems. I wonder in which planet do you leave? The majority of people can't even have more than 1 or 2 standard TV's and a cheap cell phone and that's it. What if i have two kids who live on their own cause they are in the university and they both have a PS3? They will need a HDTV each so that's... 2000$? And don't forget that the majority of gamers are teens so they rely on their parents. I don't think that a dad would give 1000$ on a TV for HD. Just my opinion though...

@ gamingdevil I'm not saying PS3 and HDTV or any electronic stuff is for everyone right now. We don't have 2 billions PS2 units all over the world but "only" 100 millions because of reasons you've mentioned. If you find something not important for you - there is no problem - you just spent your money for something you care. All I'm saying technology is cheaper day after day. With such long race in mind you can't calculate only with today's criteria.

The only positive I've heard about the Wii's software architecture is from Majesco, who says it fits their budget games strategy perfectly. So in addition to Boogie, we can look forward to more Cooking Mama Cookoff. Square and Take Two aren't going to dumb down their games to suit Nintendo's needs. Granted, anyone using UE3 can probably make games cheaper on PS3/360 than they can on Wii. I'd take Sony's first/second party over Nintendo's in terms of sales. They need to find a way to replace the hit they took when Rare left, which didn't happen during the Cube's lifetime.

Congratulations ... you just won the "I don't understand, but will make claims anyways" award ... After Majesco made Psychonauts (an expensive, critically acclaimed XBox game) and it sold poorly, and lost them a lot of money; after this they decided to focus on reducing development costs, producing simpler games, so that they could turn a profit. They never said that the Wii was about simple games, the implication was that the Wii was the only new platform not pushing developers towards $20 Million budgets. Square and Take Two have embraced the Nintendo DS so I wouldn't see why they wouldn't embrace the Wii. Also, the Unreal engine doesn't make games "Magically" cheaper (and the Wii has the Unreal 2 engine anyways) what it does provide is a consistent high performance game engine which prevents re-work by your art team; there are savings in development but on your 40 to 80 person development team it only saves the work of (about) 4 to 8 people. Most of the expense in producing a PS3/XBox 360 game is in artists producing and animating the game assets; the Unreal engine doesn't have a "Magic" create soldier button which produces a unique soldier that is fully animated. Edit: As for the Rare comment, how many Rare games were produced for the XBox in the 3 years they were owned by Microsoft? Ever wonder why Nintendo (after being approached by the Stamper Bros.) refused to buy Rare? Nintendo didn't buy Rare because they were approaching 4 year development cycles and the quality of their game was dropping ...
