PS3 will not loose momentum tell about 2011. The PS3s problem right now is that it is ahead of its time. People don't understand what Blu-Ray is, devs don't know how to fully utilize the all of the techs inside the PS3, and lastly a lot of people don't have HDTV or Broadband yet. This is why the PS3 was made for the future. For the year 2007 PS3 will slowly begin to gain momentum as blu ray becomes more established. Once Uncharted, Killzone, MGS4, Heavanly Swoard, Ratchet and Clank, Lair, Singstar, Home, and LBP start coming out sales will begin to pass Wii (360 is already getting outsold). It will also be helped buy movie sales such as Spiderman 3, Casino Royal (which along with Motorstorm will help March significantly) 300, Cars, Pirates of the Caribean, and more. Momentum will continue to rise through 08 with the Getaway, GT5, White Knight Story, FFXIII, 8 Days, and many unanonced exclusives. By dec. 08 it should be at around 300 dollars which will also help.
Sounds like the typical Sony technobabble to me.
BluRay will struggle in my opinion - DVD is great, and there is NO reason for people to want to replace it with a more expensive technology. Once it comes down to $100 players, and $15 movies - maybe. Apart from higher resolution (need an expensive TV to use this as well), it has no benefits over existing tech.
Most PS3 titles will fit the data within a DVD (9) disk. Two reasons - 9gig of data is HEAPS, and secondly a focus on cross-platform development will push games to fit on a 360 disk.
There is no way it will drop 30%-50% in price within the first 18 months. Ironically, the only way it would do this is if Sony are doing REALLY badly with the sales in the first place. Remember that Sony are STILL losing hundreds on making each machine - even with the new hardware iteration (cheaper CPU, no emotion engine). They are just trying to trim their losses at this stage.
Sony does "own" a bunch of exclusive content - and it will help a bit. Things like Sony exclusive movies, that they put out to BluRay only - but this could hurt both ways, as a low-take up of that content would hurt that brand (would Sony intentionally lose 90%+ of sales just to push BluRay?). It has to be something really significant to actually push hardware.
...
Pure and simple, it comes down to "exclusive" killer games/applications. Sony had better have some real impressive games in the pipeline, or this will get real messy. MS definitely does, and the Wii has plenty coming up. I still expect Sony to be an easy "3rd" (at least in the US) this Xmas. Europe may well be the testing ground, and MS's failure in Japan makes Sony 2nd by default.
