shams said: BluRay will struggle in my opinion - DVD is great, and there is NO reason for people to want to replace it with a more expensive technology. Once it comes down to $100 players, and $15 movies - maybe. Apart from higher resolution (need an expensive TV to use this as well), it has no benefits over existing tech. Most PS3 titles will fit the data within a DVD (9) disk. Two reasons - 9gig of data is HEAPS, and secondly a focus on cross-platform development will push games to fit on a 360 disk.
1.) How many standard tv's can you find in stores? I will tell you - few models. Situation of HDTV's is very similar to the computer market. CRT monitors were cheap and superior to LCD's for long time but now CRT tech. is absolutely wiped out. How much time did it take? LCD and Plasma aren't a cosmic technology right now. You can buy pretty solid tv for around 1000$ Is it expensive? I don't think so. Especially in Japan, USA or Western Europe reality. Have you seen a single HD movie? It's like comparing poor quality 320/240 movie to the divx. Difference is enormous. 2.) Right now maybe most of titles will fit within DVD9 but this is just silly beginning. Take a look on previous generations. Recall Tekken 1 on PSX and Tekken 3 on the same platform... The quality jump was huge, same situation with Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. This generation will last 10 years. Sony is the only one who is really prepared for this. Mark my words - 10 years. Huge textures, high quality voice acting, FMV etc. Only Blu-ray will handle this. HDDVD for Xbox360 isn't a threat as long as they will assemble it to every produced unit.
