I think your seeing a conspiracy theory cause you want to.

I've yet to see a government which wouldn't fight tooth and nail to stay in power.

To risk any bad publicity with elections looming would be madness.

Conspiracy theory?  How is this a conspiracy theory?  It's quite mundane actually as far as this stuff goes.  There isn't a person going up for something like this that doesn't have some kind of lobbiest backing themselves up.

It's a conspiracy theory when one of the principil parties said "Thanks for doing this guys" and everyone else denies it?

What would Momar Quaddaffi gain by lieing?

I thought you claimed most people were FOR this.  Now it's hurting them?

No, the UK Government getting involved in any way with Scottish affairs will do the Government huge damage. I don't think you understand British politics - Scotland had lots of powers devolved to it at the end of the last century, and it's led to the rise of the Scottish Nationalist Party, they're currently operating a minority lead in the Scottish Parliament, with the Scottish Executive being the head of the SNP, Salmond.

He's a very outspoken guy, and any time, at all, that the UK Government tries to get involved in Scottish affairs, Salmond opens his mouth, and it does the UK Government lots of damage.

The UK Government is currently being run by Labour. Labour's support is dieing, and it's looking very obvious now that they won't win the next election. Traditionally, Scotland has been one of Labour's strongholds, but with the rise of the SNP, they need to cling and fight to every last seat in the next election.

The Labour run Government getting involved with Scottish affairs in anyway, especially something as large as this, will be hugely damaging to the party - perhaps beyond repair.

Yet there is proof they did just that.

Life imprison means you are supposed to die in prison. Duh.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

i wish you'd titled your thread more blatantly, i literally just made a thread asking people their opinions on this, lol

i personally think that compassionate release, while a tricky decision to make, was the right one. what SciFiBoy said about the Scottish Government having a moral high ground, i was thinking that too. Megrahi may not have shown compassion to his victims when he murdered them and destroyed their families, but in showing compassion to him MacAskill is a good example of a morally decent human being.

but he was convicted by the Scottish in a Scottish court under Scottish law... you cant suddenly say its dodgy without a full and proper enquiry FIRST. And after all he was put up by the Libyans as the man responsible. What did you think of the official Libyan welcome festival?

scottish judges, Scots law, but just to be pedantic i want to point out that he was convicted in Camp Zeist, in the Netherlands.

and as for what happened in Libya, that was disgusting but has nothing to do with Scotland or the man who made the decision.

MacAskill releasing Megrahi doesn't make him, the SNP or Scotland as a nation compassionate.

11 Scots who died 20 years ago isn't a priority for him or the SNP.

Now if all/most of the victims families had appealed for his release they would have my upmost respect and THEY would be some of the most compassionate people I've ever heard of.

MacAskill 'forgiving' the mass murderer is like Woody Allen forgiving Hitler on behalf of the Holocaust victims.

Megrahi wasn't forgiven or pardoned, thats not what his release was for. He was released because he's dying, that in absolutely NO WAY means he was pardoned.

and MacAskill is a representative of a fair part of Scotland's population, what with being an MSP and all.

i posted it else where but it goes here as well

they should not have been able to grant him compassion, they should have asked each of the families directly related to the crime if he should receive compassion and if they felt it was worthy of granting then all for it

but t was wrong for someone else to step in and say , sorry victims he gets a pass and you have to be violated all over again

if he could not deal with the consequences of his crime then he should not have committed it

and for those trumping about compassion what about he victims of his crime that are still alive

the family that had entire generations erased b/c of this man

he should have died in prision like he was sentenced to
