Can the PSP maintain the momentum?

There's no question that the PSP is selling incredibly well right now. So let's move from there. Is it possible that making a PSP Lite is enough to permanently increase the system sales?

I was looking at some old charts, and I happened to come upon the launch of the DS Lite in Japan, March 2, 2006.

http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php?date=38781

Sales increased 184% from the previous week, sailing way past the PSP, whose sales were close to the DS's the week before. The DS even managed to come just centimeters within the PS2 software. The next week, the DS saw yet another increase, and managed to nearly double the software of the PS2.

Of course, the week after that, Final Fantasy 12 launched and the PS2 easily overtook the DS software wise. However, even with a small DS sales decrease and a humongous PS2 sales increase (176%), the DS manages to sell more than twice as much as the PS2 in hardware.

And well, here we are now. The DS rules Japan.

I don't know when the DS Lite launched in America, but the sales for the DS multiplied by 6 from June 3rd to June 10th 2006.

The DS sales nearly tripled when the Lite was released in Others.

I've seen many people who are convinced that the PSP sales will drop considerably and level off on or near its original point. So, now that I'm done with my gibberish, I challenge you this question...

Will the PSP drop in sales or will it continue the momentum?

It WILL increase sales, but wont stay as high as it is right now.

The european sales are soon to explode as well with the spiderman bundle.
Same with the american sales steadily raising 10k weekly Almost at 100k.

No one expected it to sell that well in japan.

Please don't hate me...

Easy one, nope, it can't maintain the momentum, needs more of the same (Great Games)...

Why would I hate you? All opinions are welcomed, as long as no one trolls.

Anyways, you are correct. The PSP needs to push more software to continue the momentum. Hopefully developers take notice and produce some more great games. I'm really loving Jeanne D'Arc and I'm never disappointed when I look at PSP shelf of games.

It will drop. The spike in hardware is ridiculously high and ridiculously fast because of the new hardware plus FFVII:CC released.

But, it will have a higher leveling off than it was previously selling.

 As in...90k or so?

I have a feeling that its going to drop below its normal sales, The spike was good in the short run but now everyone who was on the edge on getting one picked one up so their is going to be a lot fewer people buying them in the coming weeks.

Sony needs more games that cause these kind of spikes, but sadly I don't see any more on the horizon.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

That game is coming out in 3 days in America. It might help boost sales.

It's not gonna stay at this inflated state for very long, but I think overall sales will be higher week to week than they have been for the last couple of years. In America, sales should stay about where they are right now for a couple of weeks with the cheaper black core model coming out this week and the Star Wars special edition coming out next week. Then we'll probably see a small drop for a few weeks until the Holiday season really ramps up in November. For the rest of the year, I think the system might be able to stay neck and neck with the 360 in overall sales.

As for the games, I'm expecting Syphon Filter to be a huge success, but I'm not sure there's been enough of a marketing push for the game. It is definitely a AAA title, just go check out the reviews. The other notable titles are Silent Hill Origins, Star Wars, FF Tactics, and Castelvania Dracula Chronicles, but only two will really sell great: Star Wars and Syphon Filter. I think the rest will be solid. Then next year, God of War and Crisis Core will sustain some momentum for the first 6 months.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Unlikely, just look at how it did in Japan =/

I just hope it doesn't do as bad as Final Fantasy I and II did in the US.
