Forums - Nintendo Discussion - I have my doubts about The Conduit's first sales

The first Halo, let's face it, is very generic and a little mediocre. Even the visuals aren't that great, although they are good. Still the game managed to sell A LOT.

Wrong on so many levels its not even funny. When Halo 1 came out, it was the greatest looking game ever seen on a console. Its story was fantastic, the single player combat and quick and precise, and the multiplayer was great and competitive. You can talk trash about Halo 2 and 3, but Halo: Combat Evolved was in no way, shape or form mediocre.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

I have to agree with @Shadowblind. Halo 1 was released in 2002 and at the time there was nothing quite like it. You felt the enemy had personality especially when you threw a sticky grenade at them :) Halo also introduced more of a us against the aliens feel, like an epic battle, or struggle for life. When it was released on the PC in 2004, it wasn't the same mainly due to FPS moving forward since then. PC gaming was all about FPS and still is in some way, people would upgrade just to play the latest ones.

As for the Conduit, people like value for money. A multiplayer component like with Killzone 2 or other help to establish game sales. Also what people seem as good for the Wii, others feel they have seen it all before, especially if you own a PC, PS3 or X360. I thought the game was alittle generic, but I did like the generators for the monsters idea. People who are technologically minded always like the latest thing and in the case of FPS, its' Killzone 2, Halo 3, Far Cry 2... etc.. etc..

But all things aside the game shows off some of the best graphics for a Wii. It does deserve good sales, but I don't think it will reach them.  The more adult Wii owners will probably pirate it, and as for the others, well some will buy it.  I see the game as more of a rental. Time will tell.

I got Halo and Splinter Cell at the same time and Splinter Cell looked a million times better.  It was of course a billion times more fun than Halo

Maybe it is the case of you liking Stealth games more than FPS. Halo was a launch title in March, whilst Splinter Cell wasn't released for at least a good 6 months later - November I believe.  (Splinter Cell had more development time, Bungie was under pressure for a launch release)

I finished both the games mentioned, and even though I enjoyed Splinter Cell I liked Halo more. Everyone is different, and has there own personal tastes.

"The first Halo, let's face it, is very generic and a little mediocre."

No point of reading the rest after reading that foul statement.

Halo 1 for the time when it was released in 2001 is on par with Super mario bros and Street fighter 2 or other iconic game releases when it comes to FPS innovation and importance. Especially if you only look at consoles. There is a lot more in Halo 1 than Local multiplayer that left a mark on the gaming world.

And I think Fifa Soccer 94 is more fun than Final Fantasy 3 and Chrono Trigger combined. Different strokes for different folks my freind... Not taking away anything from splinter cell, but people and reviewers have spoken about these 2 games and one sold a lot more and reviewed a little better.

The reason why the conduit has no local multiplayer is because of the good graphics. The wii can't render two screens with those graphics. That was to taxing for the wii, at this moment probably. This is HV's first generation (Quantum 3) engine where new improvements could no longer be added to the conduit. At some point you just have to go with what you have. Or you end up like Duke Nukem Forever.

It's the same reason why Killzone 2 doesn't has local multiplayer. They beafed up the graphics so much that the PS3 couldn't do splitscreen anymore. Maybe the third installment can.

Pretty Much this. I believe that HVS stated that the Grinder will have local Multiplayer, so obivious they have made advancements since The Conduit.

...I think they wanted to show that a good game AND good graphics were possible on the Wii with there first Wii release.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

Of course multiplayer attracks many gamers, and I hope this game can shift more than 100 copies in the first weeek.

I think it can.

What do you mean by innovation?

Actually the thing that worries me a little about that engine is that it's very general-purpose. After all, they plan on developing a gladiator game leveraging it.
I'm sure that at Bungie they had to heavily specialize Halo's engine for the needs of split-screen multiplayer FPS action, but at HV they are so much smaller that they probably can't afford it.
They have a much greater return over every man-hour spent on the engine if it's really modular and reusable, even at the cost of some performance.

edit: good news about "The Grinder" having split screen. I guess that will come with an updated version of their engine.

Isn't Unreal Engine 3 also general purpose?  I don't see that holding back Gears of War.
