Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why Nintendo’s Core games aren't hitting the mark anymore

@bardicverse
He never said "hitting the mark" I was paraphrasing.

Also like famousringo was saying he was wasn't talking about sales but popularity.
The older Mario games had much better customer reception. I don't really know much about Zelda but I think Ocarina Of Time is still seen as the last great Zelda game.

Sales comparisons between the NES and Wii are unfair because of population growth and the advent of world wide launches.

Here's the thing, Mario Kart Wii sold 15.79 million, compared to 65, which sold less than 10 million and DD which sold less than 7

SMG sold only 7.93, compared to Mario 3 which sold 17.28 and NSMB which sole 18.62

TP sold only 5.26 compared to OoT which sold 7.6 and the original which sold 6.51

What the point he's trying to make is that, with the exception of Mario Kart Wii, the other major Wii core games have failed to garner the same market success as their predecessors

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Super mario galaxy sold very well, but it was nothing compared to the sales of all the super mario brothers. New super mario brothers has sold 18 (or was it 19?) million on the DS. Just consider how much a super mario bros could sell on the wii.

Exactly. Malstrom isn't calling SMG a failure because it sold poorly, he's calling it a failure for not growing the popularity of the franchise, which is something NSMB, MK DS, and MK Wii managed to do. And he's trying to figure out what the secret formula is which grows the popularity of a franchise which is already hugely popular.

I'm not sure he's right, but it is a question worth pondering. How do you take a franchise from 10 million sales per iteration to 20 million? Nintendo did it with Mario Kart Wii, can they do it with Zelda?

SMG didn't sell like NSMB because it is essentially a single player game on the Wii. I think it has sold really well and possibly represents the ceiling for a single player experience on the Wii (Wii Fit is technically single player, but it is easily broken up to share with family.)

Saying that SMG has the same expectations sales wise as a Mario game on a handheld is a stretch.

That is true, but his analysis as to why is lacking.  And that's being generous.

Not to mention that 3d platformers are automatically less inviting to people, than 2d. They seem more intimidating, so they will never sell what a 2d Mario will sell. But 8-9 million in sales are blockbuster.

There are very few games that ever hit that mark.

"Mario Galaxy met with a collective yawn from the market"

...?? almost 9 million sold...? WTF.

...because you need play it to find it boring?

I bought it, the game is ancient and 98% of the game has been done before.  Unless the next main Mario game shows something -really- new I won't bother with it.

Nintendos other games share similar problems.  Doing the same old stuff new ways.  New ways is great, but if you peeled a thousand potatoes each in a new way, you're still peeling potatoes, and it will still become boring very quickly.

But if you start peeling oranges instead then you'll upset all the people who are happy with potatoes.

I think a franchise should stay true to itself.  Mario games are defined by having certain elements and playing in a certain way.  If you're tired of that gameplay then you should play a different game.

To me, all the games in a franchise should share core gameplay.  If you feel like changing that gameplay to be different then you should make a spinoff or create a new franchise.

Lol at KylieDog. Never passes up a chance to hate on Galaxy.

Well, he does make a certain point, but it's not a particularly strong one - the games he's citing are selling in good numbers to very good numbers. Twilight Princess may end up outselling Ocarina of Time by the end of its run, and even if it doesn't it's the second-best-selling entry in the franchise, Mario Galaxy is en route to eventually eclipse Mario 64 (which was THE reason to own an N64)...

I respect the man as a market analyst but I've never really given much thought to him as a game critic, because he is not one.

Mario Galaxy has sold to almost 16% of Wii owners. New Super Mario Bros. has sold to just over 18% of DS owners.

That is not that great a difference, once you remove the fact that there are roughly twice as many DSs as there are Wiis.

Also, it is very hard to compare the sales of Twilight Princess since it sold an additional 1.56M on the Gamecube (talk about your stealth title).
