What was wrong with the old one? I liked it

I'll tackle this one, fellas.

The old one was outdated and antiquated. It was a design model that couldn't be properly expanded upon, and it needed to go.

As TalonMan has stated, this update is far, far more than a graphical update. In fact, the "graphical update" is probably the smallest part of the whole thing. See, the entire site has been reworked and recoded. EVERYTHING has been altered and a lot of new technology has been integrated into the setup. Presently, there isn't much that's actually different in the way the site itself operates (as you or I would see it), but with the new technological improvements, Brett & Co. can far more easily carry the site into new unexplored areas and do a LOT of things that we couldn't even consider before. There are a LOT of possiblities to consider now that just couldn't be done previously.

Yes, the old one had an acceptable APPEARANCE, but FUNCTIONALLY, it was an NES trying to compete against the PS1. It just couldn't cut it, and something else needed to come out.

And as for appearance, everybody, if you don't like it, ask for selectable colour schemes. As for interchangeable backgrounds. Rather than complaining, make suggestions! Tell what they could do to make your concern/complaint better. These guys have been incredibly hard at work on this site for quite a long time - all you people complaining and bickering and attacking them for this change don't realize how cutting your words are. You surf this site for free, and these guys have been working hard just to make you happy with it. Take a chill pill, relax, and back off. Look at what they've actually done to improve the site and allow VGChartz to progress into the future, instead of bickering and making them feel unappreciated.

Most of your concerns will be worked out, anyways, so don't worry. It takes time to roll out as big of an upgrade as this is. I'm sure 90% of the issues mentioned in this thread will be worked out by Monday, and most of those that aren't will be completed before next Friday.

Well I actually liked it a lot mostly because of it's simplicity. It was white and blue and easy to navigate. That's true that selectable colour schemes would be very interesting though.

Not liking it so far, but with some tweaks to the interface and layout it could definitely be a winner.

For people having problem with the space background image slowing down the site, I've found a way to get rid of it, if you're using Firefox.
Download an add-on called Adblock. After you've installed it, click on the background with the right button and then "adblock image". It's running at the same speed as the old one now.

You'd better edit that post... before you get banned.

If he gets banned for that then ban me too because there is no way i could use the site without blocking that background image, it makes a huge difference.

I'm running an older dual core laptop with a gig of ram, running XP with minimal processes and have never had a site hog so many resources.  With that image up the site was virtually unusable for me.

I am using adblock to block the the background image but not adds as they don't cause my computer any trouble.  Surely this is preferable to people with slower computers just not being able to use the site.

Now that the site is running smoothly on my computer, i can get about more easily and familiarise myself with the layout without having to deal with a laggy mess.  I'm still not a huge fan of the colour scheme but everything else is great and i'm sure i'll get used to it pretty quickly.

Lagging/skipping like a bitch while I'm scrolling threads, doesn't do this anywhere else I've been on the internet, and it wasn't doing this before.

Why the hell does the form for reporting a post open in a new window?

"My recent threads" needs to go back on the front page.

Speaking of "My recent threads", one of the threads on my list won't stop being orange, no matter how many times I click on it (nobody is making any new posts in it), its just stuck as unread and won't change.

Speaking of the platform-specific font colours, I feel the Xbox's green is a bit too bright in comparison to the other colours. Is that 33FF00 for the color's hex code? Perhaps dimming it slightly to 33EC00 would be right about the right brightness. Or, you could possibly brighten the other two colors a tad bit.

Also, as stated in the one other thread about the same topic, I also think it'd be nice if the "recent forum activity" bar was somehow integrated into the homepage again. Naturally, it can't go into the same spot (unless the home page is restructured to more closely resemble the old setup), but if it COULD be worked into the home page again, that WOULD be really nice. Not a necessity, but definitely appreciated.

Perhaps it could be a drop-down menu from the toolbar? That'd be cool. It'd need to be non-flash, though, so the links could still be right-clicked to open in a new tab or window.

I don't like that the top bar is flash now, because it means I CAN'T right-click and open in a new tab, but it's something I could get used to at the same time.

I kinda miss the recent forum post sidebar on the front page, but since it's in all the actual forum page, it's not a big deal. I understand why you'd want to free up important front page real estate.

What I really miss are the quick reply boxes on news pages.

Also, the background behind a lot of this white text needs to be darker. It's fine in this quick reply box, but too light and hard on the eyes in the actual post.

the background is a really strange choice. Why is it some picture of space when this is primarily a vide game website? Not only that, why the sudden "Black" theme? Perhaps it's the fact that i don't like change, but I truly preferred the previous look

@TalonMan

I don't have a example, but they said you could edit them now.
