Forums - Sales Discussion - Killzone 2 Sales Clarification? SCEA proves "Others" numbers are wrong

Sony Computer Entertainment was also quick to point out that US sales are just part of the global picture. "With more than 1 million copies sold worldwide and a truly only-on-PlayStation experience, the hit game has garnered the biggest initial success at retail of any first-party PS3 title to date, and will continue to drive incentive for hardware sales throughout the year," the company crowed in a statement.

Killzone 2 is also currently available in Japan and in Europe, where it was developed at the Sony-owned, Amsterdam-based Guerilla Games. Though it received critical plaudits for its intense graphics--first teased via the controversial E3 2005 trailer--the game's sleek visuals did not come cheap. According to a 2006 article in the Dutch newspaper de Volksrant, Killzone 2 is the most expensive entertainment project in the Netherlands' history, with a budget of around €16 million--approximately $21 million at today's exchange rates.

WHAT?! Only $21 million? I'm shocked!

Still, I've heard $40-60 million being thrown around. We now know those are bogus claims.

psh.... ive always held 35 - 40 million stance on this with mathematical equations backing me up. those people claiming 40+ were listening to a rumor started by sufergirl which is funny... because they only took the second part of the rumor and failed to acknowledge the first part which bunks the rumor from the get go

exactly. But there are fanboys and there are FANBOYS...to create a whole thread and analysis about this, that's sick fanboyism at its worst.

1 - as there is no clear date on any of this it leads to assumptions. When did Sony total the sales as passing 1M vs preparing the release and getting it out? How does this correlate with VGChartz sales tracking?

2 - as ever VGChartz needs to stand by its numbers (sure adjustments here and there) otherwise it is simply providing a summary of other numbers after they are released - the old it should change to match NPD, etc.

In my experience (from retail) all numbers are subject to lag. We simply don't know which sources and when let Sony know KZ2 had passed 1M at retail. Nor how long Sony took to get the release out. Your post assumes retailers updated Sony a few days before the post based on the very latest sales. That is unlikely.

PS - I don't care either way so this isn't defense, but there are too many uncertainties to take this any other way that knowing Sony are happy that KZ2 passed 1M at retail but we don't know when it passed 1M at retail.

Remember Sony knows what it sold to retailers, but will only get partial feedback (and delayed at that) as to retail sales of the game themselves.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

the numbers are very similar in US and Europe so it is 1.4 unless the npd are wrong

for killzone2, i am not sure but i think you don't have to play online to be count in warzone.

if you have a PS3 connected to the net and you lauch killzone2, you are automaticly count in warzone.

i think that because there are plenty of "players" with a score of ZERO in warzone.

So the 900 000+ killzone2 online players are overestimate.

Well Gears of War 2 has been played by 2.7m people online, which is just under half its sales, I find it hard to believe that 90% of Killzone 2 owners have played the game online, there are only 17m (maybe 19m) PS3 accounts to over 22m sales, so that percentage does seem off

There is 17 (or 19) million PSN accounts for 22 million PS3s. The PSN number includes PSP and PC numbers though. This only re-enforces your over-all point, but I felt I should clarify for those who are still under the misconception that Sony's PSN numbers are for PS3 only.
