Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whats left to sacrifice?

1. Console games today have gone down to 30fps. Most of games even dive below 30fps sometimes. Can developers squeeze some more from it? What would it look like? Would you accept it?

( I will publish my programs, which can be used to test fps soon -> http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=66343 )

2. Is input lag getting out of hand? Input lag is nearing quarter of second. Will it get even longer? What kind of impact it would have on gameplay? Would you accept longer lags?

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3725/measuring_responsiveness_in_video_.php?print=1

( I can make test program for this one also, but I am currently occupied by something else. Maybe later. )

3. Patches have came to stay. Some developers throw unfinished games on the market and patch them up later. Now they are even patching the patches. Is this getting out of hand too? Do you tolerate this kind of behavior?

4. Anything else is bugging you about how games are developed?

------------

And my answers...

1. I don't like low fps. Even 30fps is way too low for me.

2. It is getting out of hand and technically I cannot see why they couldn't lower input lag.

3. Patching is a bless and curse. Patching is good the way you can get rid some of bugs, but it doesn't mean that you can make faulty software and patch it later.

4. Zip for now.

1. I don't mind low FPS until it makes the game less playable.
2. Input lag isn't increasing as far as I know, but I wouldn't like it to increase.
3. I hate patches.
4. Nothing else

FPS is sacrificed to have the game look pretty. It's a decision the developers made and you can't do anything about it.

Patching is supposedly a good thing. Fixing bugs that have escaped the testing phrase. But as with any tool, there are always people misusing it.

As seen in some games, they just release the games and then patch up the broken controls afterward.

You could very clearly tell that some games are just not ready for release but they are put on the shelves anyways.

Input lag. If you're talking about the hardware. There isn't a problem there. However, some might try to put the blame on the hardware for some damage control and then release a patch to fix the lag afterward (which didn't require you to fix your hardware that caused the lag).

1. 30 FPS is fine for me, but I would much rather have a game at a rock steady 30 FPS, then have it look prettier, but take dips on the frame rate for it.

2. I'm fine with where it is now, though of course, increasing lag of any kind at this point is proabably not the right thing to do.

3. Patches are both good and bad. Yes, they allow for publishers to make developers throw out unfinished games to be touched up later, but other companies will know how to use a patch right. UT3 (PS3), Burnout Paradise and LittleBigPlanet all had nice features added at no extra cost to the consumer, and I can't find anything negative about that, ever.

No I am not. Its in the games already. Hardware can make it even more laggy, heres proof:

1 and 2 don't bother me as long as they are reasonable, and not much below 30 FPS.

Patches piss me the hell off though. They throw out some piece of shit they know isn't finished and, "oh its okay we'll patch it later", yeah well by the time you get your fat ass around to patching it people have stopped playing your game. Sorry, looks like you missed out.

Owner of 360

Future owner of a PS3 (when it drops to $300)

1. This really depends on the game. Certain games you can hardly notice any dip in framerate. That being said, I'm a big proponent of 'work within the confines of the hardware' which means don't over-tax the hardware just to push out slightly better visuals. This is one of the things which bugs me most about the PSP, where a lot of games that I've played have noticeable lag.

2. No, I don't think this is much of an issue at present.

3. Patching is more good then bad I'd say. Before the days of the internet games shipped with bugs as well, just play any of the old Sierra games and you'll know what I mean.

4. What bugs me mostly these days is the differences between multi-plat versions of a game. For example, I picked up NHL09 for my PC because of the 360/ps3 reviews and yes I should of looked at the PC review, but I had no idea that EA would willingly ship out a severely nerfed PC version. This sort of thing is occuring a lot lately and I find it extremely lazy and frustrating.

The only teeth strong enough to eat other teeth.

I hate the 'release now and patch later' attitude that is becoming common. Nintendo seem to be the only company that actually release finished products I also hate the way split-screen multiplayer has become increasingly rare. This is also why I hate online gaming and why I hate those who further its cause. Don't even get me started on that bastard child called DownLoadableContent.

Oh, ya I forgot about DLC, thanks for that NintendoMan. The inclusion of DLC in just about everything these days makes me extremely annoyed.

I don't like framerate drops, but I can usually tolerate input lag. I don't connect my Xbox 360 console to the net so I don't usually have to download patches (Seriously hate the fact that the PS3 has monthly updates as well and the fact that Sony games have a lot of patches for some reason) but I do hate it when there isn't a offline Co-op/multi-player mode!
