Then please enlighten me about what actually happens.
Because as far as I can tell, all that happens is you get an achievment for something while in the game, say you just made your 1000th kill or headshot or whatever, or perhaps at least some have a little humour in.... but really that's it... you just get what is essentially a text message telling you you have done whatever achievement, which is then recorded for others to see on your gamercards or whatever. (or made into a trophy for the PS3)
I don't see how that has an advantage over stat tracking, which rather than telling you when you get your 1000th crotch-shot, it just counts them all so you know exactly how many anyway.
In other words the advantage of achievments is just to show them off to others.

The concept of doing various tasks and challenges to unlock points on a scorecard in a video game existed long before the XBOX 360 came around. The 360 just presented a unified system for them.
Kirby's Air Rider on the Gamecube had entire grids filled with 360 challenges that varied from finishing so fast, to winning races with certain vehicles, powers, taking certain routes, etc, etc.
I'm really looking forward to this game--the lack of splitscreen is the only thing making me hesitant. I wonder if the unlockables have a Goldeneye/Perfect Dark level of epic win? You know, like big heads, infinite ammo, etc.
The more content the merrier right? As long as it has some quality...

I was doubting it, although one of the recent interviews showed they have a great sense of humour (at least those being interviewed did)
I like my FPSs with extra wacky fun bits, which is why Halo clones have stopped me buying them often.
On N64 I bought Goldeneye, TWiNE, Pefect Dark and Jet Force Gemini (TPS, but I don't really view them as different genres, I just call them all FPS) enjoyed them all a lot.
Then on GameCube I bought TimeSplitters 2 which is amazing, and 007 Agent Under Fire, which was dissapointing... but what made it all worthwhile was the ability to turn gravity down and then mess about with the grapple hook and the jet pack.
Then a big gap between shooters until RE4:Wii kind of, or if that doesn't really count then it was even later with Metroid Prime 3.
So I am lookinh forward to my first multiplayer FPS in a good while... I am not bothered about the lack of local multiplayer as I used to play with my friends or my sister, but I have a different group of friends now and none are really bothered anymore, and neither is my sister.

I really don't know what it is about them. I really don't. So, I don't have any reasonable answer for you either. All I know is that I never thought much of acheivements before and now that I have them it's a big deal for some strange reason.
Plus it's one of the main reasons I replay games. I get a lot of value out of them. I know it's totally juvenile, but there is just something so nice about getting them.

Well I have played games before with what basically amounts to what I explained above (minus the online showing it to people bit) so I am really not interested... I have never been one for showing off though.
Oddly the 2 Wii games I can think of that have an achievment-like system I still have no plans to buy, even though they have been/are well hyped on this website.
Those games being SSBB and Megaman 9.
