The thread is about Rare, not retro.. i was using retro as a metaphor

Rare has always been one of my most favorite Western developers, together with Naughty Dog, until they've decided to cross over to Microsoft. I was really angry. Angry at Nintendo for letting such a group of talent leave who has created a whole bunch of wonderful titles for Nintendo. Angry at Microsoft for waving around with a bag full of cash, and angry at Rare considering the fact that they probably thought money was more important.

Im not angry at Nintendo. In my mind it wasnt a bad move on their half. Yes, i do love rare, and some of my favourite games of all time were made by them, but lets look at it like this:

1. Rare were taking ages to make games for Nintendo consoles. They starting taking years to release games, and they never released a game on the GC.

2. During the 2002 fiscal year, Rare accounted for 1.5% of Nintendos sales, which is barely anything.

3. They were sold for a couple hundred million dollars, much more than they have made for Microsoft since they were sold.

4. Since they were sold they have had very very few successful games. This is mainly down to the fact that they are nearly all on the 360 though, but newer Rare games arent nearly s good as the old ones.

Sry, my mistake.

It seems to me that Rare misses working together with Nintendo. I think they should ransom itself from MS and develop for all current-gen consoles as an independent developer.

I hope ItsaMii understands that Nintendo sold Rare, it's not as if Rare left Nintendo.

First of all you have to pay respect to Rare. They rarely get the respect they deserve from Nintendo fans. Without Rare the Nintendo 64 would have died at the very least in the west. Even Nintendo could not fill out the lineup so the load fell right on top of Rare. They were expected to put out high quality games on short time frames. Just look at the volume of games that Rare put out of that console.

They put out eleven games for a console that lasted all of six years. Thanks to Nintendo Rare ended up carrying a lot of the library burden on their backs. They had to deliver high quality games in a short time frame. Anyone who owned a 64 knew they had to wait for either Nintendo or Rare to deliver the next good game. There was nobody else.

Any Nintendo fan in love with their Wii should at the very least respect what Rare did for Nintendo. Had the N64s legs been any shorter you proabably would not have gotten a GC or a Wii. Nintendo really came close to pulling a Sega. Imagine the N64 without those Rare games. Rare was not just a welcome dedicated developer the console absolutely needed them just to survive.

Gripe about delays if you must, but be mindful that the pace probably was not being set by Rare to begin with. Gripe about quality near the end, but realize this was a developer that had to put out two high quality games each year. How many developers could do that even today. Rare did a monumental job, and it is sad to see them get ragged on for it.

I agree with you. I've always respected Rare very much and still do for the fact what they've done for Nintendo and the gamers. Many of their games belong in my list of all time favorite games and would absolutely love it if any of their games will hit the VC. I also think it's nonsense to say that Rare didn't release that many games and took a lot of time to release. 11 N64 games within even 5 years, that's almost 2 N64 games a year and most of them were high quality games. Not many developers can pull that off.

I see nothing wrong with a new DKC4. If rare wants to make it, give it a shot. In the end result, the cosumer (not the analysist) decides success. We can't lose, if its bad, I won't buy it, and if its good, problably other companies will follow suit and make original vc games.

Rare has had a handheld division for a long time. When Microsoft purchased Rare, they left that division alone to do their own thing. Since then they've continued to make GBA and now DS games. In fact, I bet it's one of the few ways MS actually makes money off of Rare. ;)

I doubt Nintendo will contract for a DK4, but stranger things have happened -- Diddy Kong Racing for the DS which was actually published by Nintendo.

Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.
