An online service is not enough to persuade the mass market to purchase loads of games, not all games focus on the  mulitplayer aspect.

Sorry, but they don't.

The 360 is no more of a software beast than the PS3 or the Wii. On all three systems games sell at about 1 game per console per two-and-a-bit months.

(Which suggests that collectively our game-buying habits are more governed by our disposable income than by game or console quality - and also that for any console there are more games that we want than we can afford - on average).

The 360's software 'lead' is an illusion caused by the fact it has been out longer, and one that occasionaly gets recycled by the Microsoft Marketing Dept.

@phisheep

a 8 game attach ratio is amazing, stop spinning Sony propaganda.

On topic, its because MS markets very well and that the 360 had a steady stream of good games, while as some other competitors............which shall remain nameless.......took over 2 years to deliever.

Outstanding piece of analysis, I agree with this statement my friend.

This is correct.  The 360 being a huge software seller compared to the PS3/Wii is almost entirely because of the 1 year head start, and nothing else.

Check the PS3/360 attach rates in the US (the 360's best region for software).  Compare the PS3/Wii with attach rates for the 360 one year ago.  All consoles are aroung 7-8 games per system for the sale timeframe from launch.  The 360 has an advantage of 8.05 games 1 year ago  vs 7.98 for the PS3 today.

It isn't amazing. It is just maths.

360 has been out for 3 years. That's 36 months. Which means (roughly) the average console has been in play for 18 months. 18 divided by 8 is ...

two-and-a-bit months

Do the  same calculation for the other two consoles (not forgetting the delayed PS3 launch in Europe, which complicates the calculation a bit), and you get pretty well the same answer.

Edit:

Oh, and there's no propaganda here. Emotionally I am all Nintendo but when it comes to numbers it is strictly objective.

Well sorry to burst your bubble but the X360 games ARE selling better than PS3 games. That includes both exclusives as multi-platforms. Even if you don't count the first year, the X360 has sold more games than the PS3. Last year there were a few months were the PS3 did sell more games, but overall the X360 still sells more games. I read an article on this, but i can't find it >_

Truth does not fear investigation

Achievments. Some (lots) of people buy games purely for the gamerscore they provide.
