GameTrailers.com (GT), the premier provider of video for gamers and a division of Viacom Inc.’s MTV Networks Entertainment Group, announced today that Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s, first-person shooter Killzone 2, has won the GameTrailers Diamond Award for surpassing 10,000,000 video views on GT.com. Killzone 2 is the next-gen sequel to the original 2004 release of Killzone. GameTrailers’ media tracking tool, StreamStats, was used to determine that Killzone 2 reached the required 10 million views to earn Sony their second GT Diamond Award.

“Killzone 2’s sophisticated technology and graphics have attracted fans of the genre regardless of hardware platform, and GameTrailers.com has enabled us to deliver the best quality game play videos possible,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America. “We’re flattered the GT community has honored SCEA a second time with this esteemed award as we head towards our exclusive launch on PlayStation 3 on February 27, 2009.”

“With all the high-quality video that Sony provided for Killzone 2, the game had all the markings of a true Diamond Award winner” said Shane Satterfield, editor-in-chief of GameTrailers.com. “GameTrailers strives to deliver the very best content for its community of loyal gamers, and the Sony and Killzone 2 teams really came through in a big way.”

About Killzone 2

Developed by Guerilla Games, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Killzone 2 is the highly anticipated first-person shooter created exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3. Following events and action from the original Killzone for PlayStation 2, Killzone 2 brings players into a highly detailed, ultra-realistic "theater of war" that truly leverages the processing power of PS3.

Throughout the campaign, players will encounter lifelike and adaptable artificial intelligence (A.I.) from enemies as well as fellow soldiers, destructible environments, and stunningly detailed scenery. Additionally, players will be tasked with utilizing a host of new weapons and vehicles in the war to stop the Helghast. Featuring an extensive single-player campaign and thrilling multi-player mode, Killzone 2 delivers a host of new gameplay elements and an intense storyline that will once again drive gamers to join the ranks of the ISA and fight the Helghast, this time on the enemy's home planet.

The figures for the GameTrailers Diamond Award were compiled by Stream Stats, a proprietary tool that gives gaming industry professionals insight into which games the GT audience is interacting with the most in order to anticipate upcoming sales and analyze post release performance. Congratulations Killzone 2. The one game we really needed, as an industry, was an online shooter with the key innovation of "better graphics." Groundbreaking, really. The next "flying car" for the industry shall, I predict, be a golf game with more courses.

Edit:

To clarify, I'm commenting here on the unfortunate circumstance of games like LBP, which though innovative, travel through the industry unnoticed, while games like Killzone 2, which bring a relatively weak single player campaign accompanied with very predictable improvements in graphical technology, turn the industry on its head, with their popularity(of which gametrailers is no real indication). Sure, it's beating a dead horse, but it was my choice to do so in this case, and thus I've explained my statements, and how they relate to this topic, which proclaims the popularity of this game. That is all.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
