Forums - Gaming Discussion - would you like a 'one console' generation?

As long as everything doesn't get more expensive and the games are good I don't mind having only one console. But with more than one everything does get more exciting and not everyone is the same with the same console, it might get as boring as pc gaming.

no, imo at least 2 consoles are needed for variation and competition

Didnt Microsoft once try to get Nintendo to join them but Nintendo told them where to stick it... Also i think it should go back to just being 2 consoles.

After the last generation, Microsoft decided to be 'charitable' and tried to buy Nintendo for a few billion--basically, Iwata told them where to stuff it.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

There will never be two or fewer consoles because there will always be an audience for cutting edge technology, and one for casuals. There has been a hardcore and a casual in every generation.

This one:
PS3/Wii
Last one:
Xbox/Gamecube
The one before that:
Jaguar/64
Before that:
Neogeo/ SNES
before that:
megadrive/NES

EDIT: i meant that there would always be at least 2

Dude, Ive see you post some dumb stuff before, but calling the NES, Snes, N64 or GameCube "Casual" consoles is just you showing your blindness. The concept of casual gaming didnt really come about in force for consoles until the PS2 with things like Buzz and the eyetoy. The PS2 catered a lot more casual software than the GC did. Minus for a few 3rd party NES titles, Nintendo never really catered to a "casual" crowd.

god you are such a baby. I'm just saying that there was a console that was really expensive and catered to the cutting edge enthusiasts and a system that focused on fun games.

The competition has always brought out the best games by first and second party devs. Sony's determination to beat the Dreamcast brought us some top notch games at that time. Sega's hopes to stay alive saw some of the best arcade to console translations ever and some stellar gaming.

This gen we have seen Gears, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Halo, and other top tier titles that are the direct result of each console trying to best the other. Without the competition, these games most certainly wouldn't be the level they are at.

We also wouldn't have $500-800 hardware sold at a significant loss, either which benefits the consumer greatly in their purchasing power.

amen.

last time you critisized me because I said 'yeah anti-cheat combats hackers as well as windows updater combats virii'

You said 'der, windows updater is not even related to viruses'

even though windows updater alters some file structures so that command lines in specific viruses dont work.

Dude competition is good for us. Free market baby

If there are only two consoles next generation, there is a better chance of Nintendo buying Sony than Sony and Microsoft cooperating.

Remember, Nintendo's cash reserves are greater than Sony's market cap (stock value). Of course, I doubt that Nintendo would want to do such a thing -- because of the debt load and non-core businesses (for Nintendo) it would have to take in. (This is a statement based upon business realities, not a console comment).

If there was going to be a strange mash-up, it might be Microsoft-Apple. If I recall correctly, there is some cooperation on R&D. So Apple's desire to get back into the console game and Microsoft's need to have a handheld platform may make strange bedfellows. Of course, I doubt Apple will make any strategic decisions until Steve Jobs' health issues are settled (one way or the other).

Back to the OP - The article was insulting in ignoring the Wii, acting as if it was not a viable console when it has outsold the PS3/Xbox 360 combined since its introduction. The Wii has games that appeal to traditional core gamers, just like the PS3 and Xbox 360 have games that appeal to general audiences.

1 - you've been reported. well done

2-  I even proved to you that its wasnt, with several links to back it up. You claimed windows updater as an antivirus program, like McAffee, Norton, AVG, etc.

3 - you claimed the hardcore/casual combo in your earlier post, dont go changing it to be "fun". you clearly stated the old nintendo systems as "casual" systems in your post.

-edited for clarification
