Forums - Sony Discussion - Playstation 3 on the path of The Sega Dreamcast?

i would say the comparisson is weak... sega promised innovation and variety with the dreamcast and they kept word..you could even feel it in the otherwise neglected by all continent of europe ,

we got the first console to be able to surf the internet , the first multiplayer online games... some even supported the headset, games like shenmue offered online bonuses you could get for collecting special items in the game , the first mmorpg on a console ,one that can be played even today if you know where to look , we got titles like samba de amigo ,which was the first of the now so popular "music instrument ..thingy " genre and many others...

the main difference being.. that you could feel that sega was all in with that final console.. and that they cared about us.. it is the feeling that so many people cherish when they think of nintendo ,whereas the only thing sony loves about us is our money

as for sony.. they promised so much and delivered so little... they couldnt even deliver the promised psn store gamecard that was supposed to work like one for the i tunes shop... but still you can only shop if you have a credit card ..unless you are so fortunate to live in one of the few larger american towns who offer the service , the console was delayed many times with the resulst that the first models were still unreliable , the launch title lineup was lacking anything good .. and the flow of new (good)games through the first year was pitiful

the dreamcast failed because of the lack of good advertising.. the loss of trust in sega due to the 32X and the saturn and the coming of the ps 2 that recieved the attention and hype of the masses

the ps 3 was a disaster from the start.. the constant delays.. rumors about the lack of reliability and the 1 year headstart for the 360 were enough time to underminde the once good reputation of the ps consoles and the marketing and promotion efforts that spawned catchphrases like "giant enemy crab" and "real time weapon change" did little to change that

i dont think the ps3 will ever recieve such love and devation as the dreamcast did /does

to call a console the next dreamcast simply because its not doing so well is wrong.. and it shows a lack of understanding what made the dreamcast so great

I don't think that Sony will allow the Playstation 3 to end up like the Dreamcast. The Playstation name is one of the reasons why the Dreamcast didn't survive in the "console wars."

I personally would love to buy a PS3, however, I can't afford the $399. Also, I am fond of the Halo series, which is an exclusive to the Xbox and Xbox 360. I currently own a Xbox 360 Pro (20GB HDD), a Nintendo Wii, and a Playstation 2.
I hope a price cut will happen soon enough, however, I don't foresee that anytime in the near future :(.

@Shadowfest3

Im glad that your not unbiased to any system at all...thats good I dont know how you have so many systems lol thats alot of money to spend on games...Il be broke all the time if that was me :) lol...but Hmmm the Ps3 is not a t a bad price right now I believe but I think the ideal price for people would be to see it at $300.

Then you'll really have a huge problem buying games for all your systems lol...thanks for posting your opinion

Lol...you have a great point there Just2Fresh.  I should probably keep to one system, however, I love certain exclusive games for each system and that's what draws me in and puts a dent in my wallet.  For the Wii I love the Mario Kart and for Xbox 360 I love the Halo series, namely Halo 3.  I want to get the Playstation 3 because of MotorStorm Pacific Rift.  I played it at BestBuy and I kinda really liked the crashes, strange I know, but true none-the-less.

Dreamcast didnt sell 20+ Million consoles in 2 1/2 yrs.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

This is Sony's N64, much more accurate comparison

how so?

Consider this the peak of arrgogance in terms of Sony expecting consumers to work long hours and sacrafice their free time to buy this console, 3 parties would support based on the name alone and proclaiming this generation doesn't start until they say so.

Reminds me how Nintendo treated the industry and their consumer base during the introduction of the Ultra..err.. N64

^You're right, it is like the N64. A company, with massive success twice over, beaten on the third try by a newcomer. Of course, in the N64's case, there was a Sega console that did even worse, so it didn't seem as bad.

And the N64 wasn't even the bottom of Nintendo's trough. Hopefully the PS4 won't go the way of the GameCube.

The PS3 will sell a hell of a lot more than 33 million, though.

well i think what he meant was .the fact that like ps3 the "ultra" 64 was praised and hyped long before its release.. and how little of that was delivered once the thing was on the market...   this wasnt about its financial success but about how the customer was mistreated and decieved

sega .at the time of the dreamcast was practically the messiah of customer support

.you got a dc internet keyboard for free along with the browser software .  a headset and a compliation of multiplayer minigames  you could really tell that they were all in with this one.. exept for the marketing.but thats sega...

so unlike the n64  and the ps3 .a lot of promised where made for the dreamcast ... and they used to be fullfilled... until it was clear that the thing wasnt doing so well  and a lot of projects were cancelled .. but until then they delivered what they promised us..

and there lies the difference...  sega at a point no longer could... but sony seems to be either unwilling or too incompetent to keep its promises
