Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 August 5th Discussion Charts

Someone asked if I'd ever do em......And I am!

Anyways, the only reason I do the X360s is because I enjoy them and it helps me to understand the nature of drops, sales, multipliers, and various extraploations of systems.

I'm not going to be doing PS2/PSP charts: It's the reason I didn't start with Sony charts, as it'd be too much work with the too little time I have.

Anyways: America.

Okay, a few notes from someone that doesn't look *too* hard at PS3 numbers:

As expected, EA Sports titles dropped pretty handily this week. Expect them to continue dropping off the charts, as NCAA Football has a typical track record of 3.0 multipliers. However, with the price drop, sales should continue to hold at some point. Likewise, Nascar 08 will continue dropping.

More importantly, #2 R:FoM is continuing to show killer-app legs. Thus far, it's selling similarly to Gears of War. Expect it to continue on the top 10 for quite some time, and still major sales.

Likewise, NGS, had a great 6% drop: I believe that although software sales increases were tepid right after the price drop (15% increase), the longer the season gets, the more these new PS3 owners will begin to adopt new software titles like Resistance, NGS, RSV, Motorstorm and Oblivion along with new titles.

Rainbow Six Vegas has a good increase: this is most likely due to new PS3 addopters finally wanting to pick up a strong multiplayer title, ala R;FOM.

Outside of this, strong drops for the mid level multi-port titles. Darkness, Transformers, and such had strong drops. Expect them to be weaned out of the top 10 very shortly.

 #10 #10 Ridge Racer 7 581 141,579 -26.1% 39 145,000

This week, as expected, we saw a decent drop in software sales due to diminished hardware sales (and with it, fewer units to attach software to). #1 and #2 saw large, but expected drops. The big question is if they can manage sub-50% drops from now on. Hopefully, EBG5 will continue to sell well.

Outside of this, there really isn't much to comment about: only Rainbow Six and CoD3 managed sub-20% drops. RSV continues to do real well, and should wind up with very respectible numbers for a console shooter in Japan.

The big questions are: with no new software for a few few weeks (Bladestorm at 8/30), can the PS3 software (outside of EBG5 and WM) manage sub-15% drops? If so, sales could continue to do well for the next weeks. Also, how much lower will hardware go? Will we see sub-15k numbers, or will it manage a bit more?

Hopefully you enjoy one of my few contributions to the Sony forums :)

Great work!
I cant beleive folk soul bombed so hard. It looks like the best PS3 release this year IMO.
HSG5 should overtake GM in three weeks.
I think US hardware numbers will level out at 34-35k until lair and heavenly sword come out, with a small boost for madden and warhawk.

Eh. I wouldn't say Folks Soul bombed hard, considering the pre-order status of retailers dooming it.

Retailers had only 20,000 units available on the first week - it's gladly sold far more than the initial preorder.

Not only this, the company that made it (Game Republic) doesn't have the marketing budget, or pedigree that other RPG makers have for Playstation RPGs. It was doomed in the beginning. Most Sony fans thought FS would outsell X360's Trusty Bell. I was one of the few that was right that it'd sell within the realm of what other games from the company have sold. Either way, a good game is a good game - a US release should net it an extra hundred thousand copies easily (ala Enchanted Arms for X360/PS3).

Seeing how PS3 sales are during Lair Week, as well as Lair sales will be interesting. Warhawk, imo, won't move any hardware units - Madden will though. Madden should sell ~500k copies for the PS3, and that'll be a great succuess.

yeah i hope folk soul sells enough for them to make a second, i didnt relise it had such a small shipment to Japan.

Great work.

Resistance has crazy legs, new adopters are buying it in droves it seems as it's made a big comeback in the last few weeks.

Hell, 130,000 copies of Resistance in Japan is much higher than I would have ever expected.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Great job MrStick.
As Ckmlb touched upon, Resistance has some crazy legs. It may not be a "Halo Killer' (God do I hate that term), but it definitely has been one of the most successful FPS' on any Sony platform to date.

HSG 5 will be interesting in the coming weeks. The PS3 needs something with legs in Japan, hopefully HSG can do that.

Resistance IS a great game, getting an average of a 9-9.5 is good.

mM

The reason why Folksoul didn't sell too well has somewhat to do with the fact that it's more of an action/rpg than a traditional Japanese RPG which probably meant that a lot of Japanese RPG fans didn't like it.

I'm looking forward to it, looks great too.

Resistance isn't a "great" game.  It's a good game that has an 87.7% rating on gamerankings.com.  Which is in line with other good games such as GRAW 2 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.  I know you only post pro-sony stuff and generally bash other systems so in the interest of the truth somebody should set you straight.

<> By the way, an average of 9-9.5 would be about 92-93% ratings.

Resistance is doing well but it's being given too much credit, it's the best game on the PS3 at the moment so of course it will sell well, I think that in the face of better competition it wouldn't still be selling so well, BUT I expect it to sell well for the life of the console now.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, I'm just saying it's doing better than it deserves for its relatively generic alien first person shooter type game, because it's the best game on the PS3.

If I was to buy a PS3 right now I would certainly be getting Resistance along side it!
