Forums - Sony Discussion - To adress all the recent home hate...

Many of the problems people are having with Home is their lack of understanding in what it's purpose or direction is , stop rating home by traditional gaming standards it's more like Myspace or Secondlife as opposed to Gears or Resistance.

For the milionth time, the public beta thing is crap.  Again, I'll explain what beta means in the gaming world:

  • content complete - Home does not have all its base content.  If it did, it wouldn't feel empty when walking around and you would actually have options in dressing up your avatar other than the stupid amounts of options in the face.  Not to mention that there are only something like six arcade machines and the whole bowling alley just feels unfinished.
  • Progression and major show stopper bugs gone - In my short time with Home I encountered two major bugs
  • Final Art - See content complete because these two have a lot in common.  Also the fact they still have the same three pixalated movies playing over and over again isn't a good sign.
  • The Game should be completely playabled - This is a harder one to apply to Home since they can regularly ship things so I guess they got 1 out of 4.

So this isn't an open beta, it's a failed game.  Somebody made the promise that it would be out by 2009 and rather than having another release date whiz by they forced the team to pay attention to this one.  What they got was the team releasing the product a week or two before holiday vacation and releasing something that just wasn't ready for public viewing.

As I said earlier, find me a positive review/impression and I'll find 10 negative ones.  Most people are going to go into Home, get pissed off at waiting in line to play games, see the lack of content, see how lifeless it is, and never come back.

I know it has beta plastered all over it but most people don't frequent forums and news blogs so all they know is Home was released.  They go into Home and are completely blindsided by the bad and dont' see the potential.

Face it, Home is a failure and isn't something that helps the PSN.  It's a cumbersome menu that only slows me down in getting to what I actually want to do: play games and watch movies."

Firstly Home isn't a game in same way Gears or Halo 3 is , it's not all that much of a problem if it doesn't have the cool features , amazing graphics and 7.1 audio that's not the purpose of Home. Home is a community based game so it's strength lies in the size and quality of the comunity , in truth all the features of Home do is compliment it's most significant element , the community.

Ok fair enough you hate it , it's a buggy , lifeless piece of crap ; the most vile thing since Judas but that's all subjective . If people still populate home , communicate with each other and have fun in their masses then Home is a sucess . You don't say "oh myspace has crappy features and lags the crap out of my PC so I won't visit the site" it's the Myspace community that keeps people coming back , the features just compliment the community that exists there.

So in short it doesn't matter if Home is utter shovelware , if it has a thriving community intergrated with PSN then it has achieved it's purpose .

and yet Home fails to impress IGN, what does that tell you, what was it, "boring"?
Home has failed to deliver if this is what the team can produce in 4 years then I have pity for Playstation.

I don't think you've actualy read my post ...

Look at Wii play for example , it's strength doesn't lie in the quality of the game it's the apeal it has the consumer that is vital. Based on reviews for Wii play alone you'd be convinced it was a flop but the sales speak for themselves , game reviewers are decent indicator of a games quality but useless for measuring it's apeal .

Yes, we get it. It's not a "game" but it fails even in what it tries to do is the problem. Everything they've done with it has been a terrible idea. From the waiting lines to play simple flash games, to the unnecessary microtransactions (they should've just put out a donation box, that's what the microtransactions are), to the terrible movie theater that only shows old grainy previews that you can't select.

And saying "It's all about the community, and only the community" is dumb. If that's the case then I can take ten minutes to go register a message board somewhere and it will have equal potential to home. It will all be about the community. Sony took years to do that, and made something far worse.

You know what the purpose of home is? The purpose of home is so Sony can go to some company and say "look, we have 15 million people that use HOME (or at least have DLed the application), that's a very sizable captive audience!" and then hope that somebody hands them a sack of money to put a billboard in there somewhere. That is the purpose of home. And it is pathetically transparent.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

I support this thread. Sorta.

Home is not a game, and if it works as an online community then I'll call it a success. But as many have pointed out, it doesn't seem to be doing that very well so far. The interface is clunky, there's not enough there to bring folks together, it's buggy, and many find it borderline creepy. I think that's most people's problems so far.

If Sony fixes these things, then we can call it a success. But so far, it doesn't seem to be doing its task well.

*Note: I haven't played it myself. I'm just summing up the many disparate opinions I've read so far.

@Vagabond

We all know that behind every product is the intention to make a healthy profit but we're not talking about thar right now.

When I say "purpose" i'm talking about what Sony intends to achieve but not from a financial point of view . The goal for Sony in regards to Home is to have a thriving community , even if Home itself is a piece of shit it won't change the fact that community is the significant factor.

You may be able to get a better experience elsewhere but that's all subjective.

Criticising Home as a product is pretty much a waste of time , what a better pursuit would be to critise Homes ability to attract and facilitiate an online community. The fact that you , others and every gaming outlet in existance don't like Home means absolutley nothing at the end of the day it's the individual who decides she/he wants to be a part of the Home experience and that is the true determining factor in Home's sucess.

Home is not a game, thats why I seriously LOLed and facepalmed when someone voted it as Game of the Year in the VGChartz user votings.

So you're saying home may be a peice of shit, but people might still use it? That's not something to brag about. This was the last line in my topic.

I'm sure somebody somewhere will have fun with it, hell a community will actually form. But keep in mind EVERYTHING will form a community if it's free and readily available. That doesn't mean it's not a surrealistic nightmarish postmodern hellscape.

Saying that people will use it even if it sucks is not a very good....anything. The interwebs at large are critisizing it as a piece of crap. If you go online the people using it are almost exlusively dicks that are just yelling "FUCK" while doing the running man to anybody with a female avatar. This is not success, and it's not gearing itself for future success.

Home has the best graphics out of any internet community. It puts the graphics of the Sims and Second Life to shame. LOL

You or Sony don't need to adress nothing, the media and most gamers just simply hate sony now, look at the media is like they not have nbothing to post just only negative things towards sony, even with the psone and 2 era that make a lot of people happy, they just forget and now the brain washed marketing and hype of microsoft are making like sony is the worst companny in the world and america and uk they just hate sony now, you can produce the greatest game in the world and they wil critize the game. Even sony own consoles are negative about their games and the product itself, sony is just fighting with a wall, to dificult to climb. I'm just enjoy the games and don't care about the negative or hype trash.
