Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony upgrading cell chip for PS4

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/30/impress-watch-sony-contemplating-upgraded-cell-for-playstation/

i wonder when the PS4 is coming out

lol i like the fun fact at the end of the article.

that would be a good move though i think, it'd save Sony money just upgrading the chip, instead of creating something new. and they could sell the PS4 for cheaper than PS3.

what sony, 16 core processor?

^No actually the PS3 cell is already different from the cell used in other products. It's like there's Pentium 2 Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 except in Cell's case they don't change the name for them. I wasn't surprised that they would continue using cell in PS4, and it's a smart idea why waste technology that can be expanded.

Cool.

and in referance to the second post (the Wii one). Someone could say the same thing about the PS2.

not an upgrade from what i have been reading, not even cores increase, same chip die shrunk

lool,,,do you honestly believe that a company would use a 7 year old chip(by the time PS4 comes out) in their next gen machine?it would be more expensive to use the old chip than a new upgraded one casue in 5 years they will not produce this cell,,,there will be a more advanced cell.

that's kinda of obvious that they won't use the same chip.

actually the very well might the power of the cell will/can not be fully taped because of its chipset implementation, honestly completly revising the board i/o controller, ram, and gpu, could make the cell last much longer, and even improve it theoretical top end. the ps3 MB much like the 360s was ruched, but unlike the 360s where speed penatalties werent as bad due to its traditional nature, the poor execution on the ps3 mb has really hurt the cell. im beginging to belive that the ps3 due mainly to ram constraints and i/o throughput issues will never operate at more than half capacity, manily due to efficinetcy issues, basicaly large amounts of time the chip is waiting to be told what to do far more than it should be. remeber a computer is only as fast as its slowest part, and the cell is hindered by its mb tramedously.

also bullshit on being more costly to use the old chip, on top of being refined in production which will make for more good chips per batch the die shrinks will make it more power effecint, and more profitable per waffer as wel. design a chip is costly, and they bailed on the allance for it, so it will cost them even more to ask ibm to design a chip just for them, unless they decided to use whatever ibm desides to put out and shoe horn a gerneralised cell chip into a games station, and not a game specific chip. changes like that cause instruction set issues which could break backwards compatability, and ibm has been known to ignore powerpc (which the cell is a member of) alliance rules when laying out instruction sets

Is Obvious that PS4 will handle SAME Architecture, so it will be PS3 Compatible and will have more cores and more MHz and most obvious, next GEN Graph and a LOT MORE Mem.

PS4 is really obvious.

PS3 has 1 big problem, just 256MB RAM, if it was 320MB RAM should be eazier to convert from Xbox 360 do PS3 games that are multiplatform... oohh SONY..

if sony's next console is called 'ps4' then i'm going to go nuts. ps3 sounds bad enough in my opinion!
