Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 3 reasons for nintendo to be worried

The Virtual Console and the fact that some people are paying for things that have been available on the internet for at least ten years for free has nothing to do with the Wii? One of the Wii's biggest selling points to hardcore gamers is the Virtual Console but their are better ways to play many of those games. If you're a fan of oldschool Nintendo games and they are the type of hardcore games that you want to play it could be that even the FC Twin is a much better way to go.  At least there you are spending your money on collectables rather than little digital tags.

Stealing games has never been a valid alternative to paying Nintendo's reasonable prices. It's just that now there's an alternative which, unlike the FC Twin, is actually practical for most gamers.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

One thing that could make the Wii more appealing to me is if it made it possible in some way to play DS games on tv as the SNES could play gameboy games and the Gamecube had the Gameboy Player.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

Nintendo is in a very strong position, and it seems at the moment that there is nothing to stop them, BUT
- Wii sales curves have been heading (steadily, but slowly) down for the last 2-3 months. Yes, there is annual fluctuation, but for instance PS3 has been able to keep up the sales
- Wii shortages are not a problem in mainland europe, and in the US the shortages are not as big as before
- Wii's "novelty" image is no longer a very big sales factor

The point is, unless Wii gets good games, and 3rd party games soon, they might, but just might, be heading into trouble.

Lost my faith in VGChartz. Too many stupid and ignorant Americans, even as moderators.

It's a shame, really. "The Boss" should do something radical about this Americanization, but it seems hardly feasible, so my days here are numbered.

Would love to know the original source on that opinion piece.

Given this, Nintendo has nothing to worry about. The price drop made minimal if any difference in Europe. It will probably have about the same impact in North America and Japan in the long run.

By the way, love the dig about the Wii being cheaply made in a story about the Xbox 360.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

"Seriously, none of those are an issue. Nintendo only has one thing to worry about:

1) Nintendo."

Possibly, and their at best rather bland E3 outing was evidence that they do really need to worry about that.  I know that  their E3 showing really did a lot to dampen any enthusiam that I had for the Wii.  It felt like a slap in the face like they were saying we are Nintendo and we're going to give you cr*p games like Raving Rabbids, an inferior version of Call of Duty 5, Jedi Master****** W*****, Animal Crossing (without the animals you all know and love), and Wii Music, and you're going to take it with huge smiles and say we're the greatest game company on earth because we're Nintendo and you are our fans.  The best thing they showed in retrospect seemed to be Wii Sports Resort and that is not really my type of game.  Actually, now that I think about it, their E3 Conference reminded me of that part in Eddie Murphy's Raw where he said that Richard Pryor told him to tell Bill Cosby to have a coke and a smile and shut the **** up."

I know that most of my current resentments against the Wii and Nintendo generated from their E3 conference because before that I had been sending them very nice and polite letters asking them to bring Mother (Earthbound 3 ) or an Earthbound Collection to the US in some form and even though they refused to do it for some reason, I didn't find their refusals on the matter to be as much of a slap to the face as the E3 Conference.

I know you have to be someone's joke account, but seriously, E3 sucked for everyone.  It's a shell of it's former self.

Price drops never have a long term impact on sales.  Yes, it was definitely needed.  But I don't see it as a threat to Nintendo.  They could easily counter with one of their own.  Heck, they could give them away if they wanted to and still not have a loss for the quarter/year.

BTW, I actually saw one in the wild this weekend (when I bought Wii Fit).  That makes 5 I have seen in the nearly two years since launch.  The one I bought, the one the guy behind me bought, two at Wal-Mart last summer and the one this weekend.

5 in two years...

Really worried for what.

So whomever wrote those points thinks there's a chance that the fastest selling console will lose to the slowest selling console?
Seems... strange (I'm sorry, I meant; retarded).

The Xbox360 price cut is more of a threat to PS3 sales than Wii sales. The "now lower than the Wii" Arcade package has never been all that popular since it totally lacks a harddrive. Might as well save yourself some money and get an Xbox with an HDD built in, because you're going to need it eventually.

Nintendo claims that demand is dropping a bit and that production numbers are way up--they currently believe that they will find equillibrium around by the end of this year.... which happens to coincide with the holidays, so that's unlikely. If they meant "by the end of this fiscal year," then it could be likely.

The only remaining hardcore gamers that don't know about the Wii's 2009 "tons of hardcore" line-up are the stern "haters," and the ignorant. Next year will see 3rd party companies giving hardcore gamers more than enough reason to pony up the dough to have a Wii. Most consoles can make themselves worth owning by having 3-5 "must have" titles. The Wii can easily fill that. The only people who don't admit that simply don't want to.

Metroid Prime 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The Conduit
MadWorld
Fatal Frame IV
House of the Dead: Overkill
Tales of Symphonia
Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attactive People

These titles either currently make the Wii worth owning, or are very likely to add to that worth. A storage solutions looks as though it may finally be coming around (let's hope it's not retarded like a some "virtual harddrive"), voice chat is coming, new peripherals are stopping, and unique new titles (Deadly Creatures, MadWorld, Castlevania: Judgement, etc) are coming. By the end of 2009, anyone still dismissing* the Wii is clearly not a real hardcore (and no, this isn't a bad thing to be, just some people make it bad) gamer. It's the perfect compliment to an Xbox360, PC, or PS3 since the Wii offers a lot of stuff not coming to those three as they share an awful lot of their titles.

*Not owning it is different from blindly dismissing it. You're "gamerness" can still be apparent if you don't own a Wii by the end of 2009, but if you're still whining and dismissing the thing, you're probably not a gamer. Probably ust some sort of whiney bitch.

Am I blind or I still see people predicting a near doomsday for the Wii?

Someone lend me glasses, I might be short of sight!
