Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the brand name worth additional review score

If you were a reviewer and a fan of the series would u add some points, only because it's fallout or whatever?

Hypothetically, no. But I guess it's hard to resist those bribes!

no, its not.
but to Gamespot it is. like the above poster said, its hard to resist those bribes, and Gamespot falls for it every time

I would take the money and run. What a reviewer says usually doesnt influence sales, so id give the people a good review for a pretty penny.

I have no morals

If a game is good, it's good. If a game is bad, it's bad. I might even deduct more points if it was from a franchise I liked but wasn't quite as good a game as it's predecessors.

I would weigh the quality of a game on its own merits, regardless of the series that it belongs to. Of course, chances are that if I liked the previous iteration of a series, the new title will be sufficiently similar that it would get a good score from me.

Super World Cup Fighter II: Championship 2010 Edition

It might work both ways. I think if you are a fan of a series you are likely to enjoy a new version and look at it as a great game even if the average person who hadn't played previouse versions of the game would only consider the new game to be an ok game. In that sense it might result in a higher score in your eyes.

But on the other hand, if you are a fan you may go into the new game with inflated expectations. If the game fails to meet that expectation you might feel it is not really that good while the average person playing the game with no previous experience of the series might consider it to be a great game. For example Mario Sunshine was a great game but people put it down because it couldn't live up to the expectation that had been created as a result of Mario 64.

It depends.

playing a sequel to a game series you love can either cause you to hate the game because it has a few flaws (Mario Sunshine) even though it is still an excellent game.

Or vice versa playing a game from a series you love may mean you rate it higher than it would be on it's own because of the nostalgia (Twilight Princess)

All reviewers can do is rate the game based on how much they enjoyed it, it's not their fault if they are biased for or against it due to past iterations.... which is why gamers should stop focussing on the scores a game gets and start reading the reviews, because a good reviewer will always mention things like that. Whether it seems better tha predecessors or worse.

If I like a brand, it's because it's attached to a bunch of great games (hello Bioware) and therefore doesn't need special treatment.
