It might work both ways. I think if you are a fan of a series you are likely to enjoy a new version and look at it as a great game even if the average person who hadn't played previouse versions of the game would only consider the new game to be an ok game. In that sense it might result in a higher score in your eyes.

But on the other hand, if you are a fan you may go into the new game with inflated expectations. If the game fails to meet that expectation you might feel it is not really that good while the average person playing the game with no previous experience of the series might consider it to be a great game. For example Mario Sunshine was a great game but people put it down because it couldn't live up to the expectation that had been created as a result of Mario 64.
