koffieboon - spectrum - the games you listed are 2 (Halo) - 4 (GTA) times bigger than MGS4... Can't you give an example of a game with the same calibur that applys to this situation?

and spectrum nice try with the " i though they would have shipped more" cheap shot.

Halo 3 after 4 month was selling like 60k copies per week...less than MGS after 2 weeks...and supposedly this situation will go on for at least 4-5 weeks. By then the channell will be completely wiped out of the 1st shipment.

as for the shipped copies i still think that 3M isn't such a big number for the most hyped game Ps3 had so far...ok, it's hardcore...but it's not more hardcore than, let's say, GeOW (that was a new franchise AND could count on an installed base that was half of ps3). Still a major hit (as any game that sells 1M+ copies) but I expected more.

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M

i agree with Bodhesatva because that was the point i was trying to make when i created this thread, having a million spare is to high and i think changes will be made soon when the npd figures come out, but i think the main issue is europe it seems more undertracked than the other regions because it had supposedly shipped a million there in day one

If it is undertracked, it is because of America, which we will just have to confirm with NPD's reports in a couple of weeks.

Well, not that often we get shipment numbers of just released games so I don't have another example. But I think the given examples say a lot.

GTA IV sold less in its fifth week than MGS 4 in its second week and had 2.5M copies lying around compared to only 1M for MGS 4. At the current rate of sales it will take GTA IV another 10 weeks to sell the 11M copies, but since sales will only decrease it might actually take 15-20 weeks.

Microsoft announced 8.1M copies of Halo 3 shipped at the end of 2007, while this site only had 6.85M sellthrough at that moment. So months after its release there are still 1.25M copies lying around when the holiday sales are over. At the moment Halo 3 still hasn't sold through the total shipment from the end of 2007, although it is getting close.

There's really no way to tell if it is or not. If it is undertracked it is probably no more than 300k or so. I don't think it is overtracked based off the same reasoning off Bodhesatva.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

In reading this thread, I have seen a couple of people mention speak almost reverently of NPD.

Remember, they don't track Wal-Mart or Toys R Us. Thus, it very well could be that VGC is closer to reality and that it NPD is undertracking. (If you read Patcher's comments last month after Wii Fit's numbers, he hints at this).

Normally bundled games are included in the numbers at Vgchartz as far as I know.

Hmm, where have I seen this before?

I really can't confirm it, but those numbers seems about right. It might be a bit undertracked in europe, but definitely not in japan and america. The game has sold 1.9 million copies in 2 weeks to a userbase of roughly 13.5 million, which is an amazing feat in itself, so i really don't think it's undertracked. And if it is, it's probably not undertracked by much.
