Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

the travelling in time thing after dead sounds interesting.

but one thing i want to add: saying that life could have come from another planet does not explain it's origin, there's still the question what caused life to develop on that other planet. i think if someone could explain me that, i'd turn atheist, but as long as this is not clear, i think this has a supernatural origin.

I'm an atheist, but not the preachy, argumentative type. It's not my place to try and change people's beliefs, and I really wish that the Christians on my college campus shared this view.

I wish the athiests at my school were like that. ;)

I personally am a Christian, and have seemed to have spent the last few years a lot of time argueing with athiests, actually they argue with me, which is weird because they have no motive for doing so.

To people that think that the chance of God existing is slim, consider this: Taking into account all the different variables that would have to just right for life, distance from sun etc, the chances of life appearing are similar to that of a tornado going through a junk yard and making a 747. Also, where do morals come from? How did Jesus fulfil hundreds of prophesies in a book written several years before he was born, including things that were out of his control, such as where he was born? These are other questions that aren't really explained by anything else. On top of that, apart from in bacteria, scientists have yet to find any other beneficial mutations in other creatures.

An experiment was done in the early 50's in which the early atmosphere of earth was replicated inside of a glass bubble.  This bubble contained Hydrogen, Helium Carbon, Ammonium and many other basic elements.   An electrical current was applied to the bubble and the elements began forming bonds.  When studied, these bonds were identified as basic amino acids.  Or as otherwise known, the building block of life.  I will not speculate as to whether this happened on our planet or elsewhere, but I will say that these amino acids are found on many meteorites and comets.

These aminos would eventually form into the first single celled organisms.

"Taking into account all the different variables that would have to just right for life, distance from sun etc"

If there are an infinate number of stars in our universe, and only one in a billion have planets rotating around them. And of the stars that have planets rotating around them, if only one in a billion have the right variables for life. And of the planets that have the right variables for life, if only one in a billion actually have life. Then there are still an infinate number of planets with life within our universe.

"On top of that, apart from in bacteria, scientists have yet to find any other beneficial mutations in other creatures."

That is just ridiculous. There are literally thousands of beneficial mutations I can think of just off the top of my head. Opposable thumbs, Skin pigmentation, Frontal Cortex, walking upright...

Many creationist just reject most beneficial mutations because they occur so slowly they can only be studied through fossils.

Check out what scientologists believe... This story is presented to a Scientologist after spending many years and tens of thousands of dollars practicing their religion. I AM NOT JOKING!!!

Xenu (sometimes Xemu) is introduced as an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living. Scientologists believe the alien souls continue to do this today, causing a variety of physical ill-effects in modern-day humans. Hubbard called these clustered spirits "Body Thetans", and the advanced levels place considerable emphasis on isolating them and neutralizing their ill effects.

It's no more outrageous than the bible.

I was originally gonna post a long tirade about my exact belief, but that would be quite long (and make it obvious I just joined to answer this thread). The question is not what are the slim chance life would appear on earth without god, but what are the chance god exists if there's life on earth. The question is logically flawed in the first place.

On a different note, all hail to the FSM

Edit: Sorry, let me rephrase that, people like to ask what are the chances of life on Earth if god doesn't exist, when in fact the real question is what are the chance god exists if life on Earth exists.

"It's no more outrageous than the bible."

Hmmm, the Holy Spirit raping Mary in the middle of the night and abandoning his son, the son of god, to be killed on the cross vs. Xenu flying everyone to Earth on DC-8's, dropping them into volcanos and blowing them up with H-bombs.

I think I'm going becom a Pastafarian
