Forums - Sales Discussion - Mario Kart Legs > GTA IV Legs in NA

2 weeks is not any indication of how "legs" will pan out.

Around the Network

Yeah, Two weeks is too early to state "legs" or not, or how long they'll be.

And GTA:SA legs Pwn many games legs... Don't talk about my baby.

So the 360 version had a much bigger launch and a smaller drop in NA? Thats hardly evidence of MK's better legs. But then again no-one and I mean no-one should start talking about legs for at least a couple of weeks minimum.

I have a question:

Why does anyone care?

I wanted to lock it for this very sentiment.

So why didn't you?

Really, why it's worth having a debate about two games second week numbers and what they mean into the future is beyond me. Tey both did what every game does in their second week that sells as well as they did in the first week: drop an assload. Because, you know, there's an assload of space for them to drop.

And of course GTAIV will have better numbers than MKWii. San Andreas is the best selling non-bundled console game of all time. If you rightly separate the various Mario games into their genres, Mario Kart is Nintendo's fourth or fifth biggest franchise (a case could be made that all of the following are bigger franchises than Mario Kart: Pokemon, Mario Platformers, Zelda, Smash Brothers. If MKWii sells higher than SMG it'll be the first time a Mario Kart has ever sold more than the main series game on a Nintendo platform). If GTA IV didn't sell more than Mario Kart both in the short term and the long term that wold be a huge, shocking thing. It probably won't happen. GTA games more than any others are likely to be the biggest sellers for both HD consoles this gen.

You can gaurantee, though, that MKWii will sell more than most of the other big games for either system. As good as MGS4 probably will be, MGS doesn't sel the way Mario Kart does. And I doubt any of he biggest non-GTA game from here on in will be able to get over the massive lead in number of consoles the wii has to outsell the biggest Wii games.

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

A more detailed history appears on my profile.

MK sell forever, GTAIV wil stop selling with a new GTA.

That isn't really relevant. Mario Kart Wii will also stop selling when a new version of it comes out.

Which will be when? Next generation? So another 4-6 years?

Why can't they both have legs? GTA has something going for it that it didn't have last generation: downloadable content. That could keep interest up even longer than previous iterations. Not to mention it's come relatively early in this gen, so many more people will purchase it as they get a new PS3 or 360. Mario Kart Wii has a the advantage of stratospheric sales of it's console and the Mario name. So why can't both have 'legs'? This isn't a zero sum game especially when comparing two games marketed to vastly different audiences(I'm talking general population, here.)

On an off topic note: anyone else notice that the market share percentages on the front page are perfectly flush? Geeky observation, I know.

GTA IV doesn't need legs now, it has such a substantial lead Mario Kart Wii will never catch it. Quote me on that.

I'm just wondering if Mkwii will have legs like Mkds, don't know for sure

and I agree with 2 weeks being to early to tell if a game is doing good or not in legs

If you mean both versions combined you could be right (but MKWii might do something spectacular)

I am pretty sure however that MKWii will sell more than each version seperately.

It's kind of hard to have legs when you outsold Mario Kart, the first week by what? 4:1 ratio? Of course one is going to have a bigger drop off, it sold an insane number of copies more.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
