Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Professionals who predicted the success of the Wii

1) His name is Michael Pachter. Not Michael Patcher.

2) Gabe Newell was right. The PS3 was a total disaster when he said that. That was in January 2007.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Gabe Newell worked on Half-Life and Portal. He gets a free pass at life. He can be as fat or as anything as he wants.

Wow the link Taurus posted harboured this:

Merrill Lynch, Wii household penetration in US/Japan through 2011, made February 2007
http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=15309external link

Now Merrill Lynch analyst Yoshiyuki Kinoshita is forecasting that by the year 2011, nearly 30 percent of all U.S. households will own a Wii. In Japan, Kinoshita believes that number will climb even higher, reaching a third of Japanese households.

 ---

The question I have to ask is how many households are there in USA and Japan?

I would suspect about 100 million in USA and 40-50 million in Japan, (though I have no idea) This would mean over 30 million Wiis in America and 15ish million in Japan.

Well the PS3 is kind of a disaster for Sony.

It's doing ok, don't get me wrong, but it was sold to the shareholders as a moneymaking machine.
Next week Sony will still report big losses on its gaming division.

A preview report came out last week and Sony is expected to lose about $1.12 billion for the FY.  No word on what the Q4 numbers were like yet.

They lost 1.078 billion acrosss the first two quarters.  I don't have Q3 numbers for some odd reason but overall FY will be a loss of $1.21 billion so apparently they lost money in Q4 as well.

Q1($-237 million) + Q2($-841 million) + Q3(x) + Q4(z) = FY($-1.12 billion)

(Q1+Q2[$-1.078 billion]) + (Q3+Q4(x+z) = FY($-1.12 billion)

($-1.078 billion) + ($-1.12 billion) =$-42 million(x+z)

Sony must ahve still lost about ~$42 million during Q3 and Q4 and since you claimed they made profit in Q3, Q4 must have negated that profit by ~$42 million.

I hate to be nitpicky, but the third line should read:

($-1.078 billion) - ($-1.12 billion) =$-42 million(x+z) (not a plus, a minus), otherwise, the total comes out to -2 billion or so.

Thanks.

That's what happens when high school was 12 years ago.
