Forums - Gaming Discussion - Looking for a game to play with my wife

Cuphead.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Resident Evil 5.

Played it with my fiance and she loved the hell out of it. Literally, her most fun coop game she played. She's not a gamer at all and never used a game controller and this was the first coop game we played together. After that she got opened to playing other coop games (ie. Portal 2, Resistence 1 & 3 etc..)

Mario Galaxy or odyssey.  She can simply point the Wii Remote and collect star bits or move cappy around.  It won't get anymore simple.  With time she could upgrade to Mario 3D World.  I would start with Nintendo games, they are simple by default.

I would also toss in Yoshi's Crafted World and Super Mario Party as other options.  Kirby as well.  Go Nintendo for ease of access.

Guys, I think you have really high hopes for someone who has problems knowing where each button is located.

I talk for my personal experiences in these cases: You may think that a certain game is easy to pick up. But we are people who play videogames almost daily. We have many aspects of videogames interiorized in our mind. It's instinctive and instantaneous for us.

But for people who don't play videogames often... things like pressing two buttons at the same time for running in Mario or drifting in Mario Kart is a huge barrier for them. Things like "controlling the camera" has very little sense to them. Having to do many different actions like attack, dodge, block, jump, rotate the camera, lock on the enemy, use items... that's too much for them.

All these situations make them frustrated, especially if you are playing with them. Because they can see that you know exactly how it's done, but they are having serious difficulties. Or worst: if you're the kind of person that takes the controller out of them to show them how it's done... they hate that. It's like calling them idiots xD
After half an hour or less, they want to quit. And I don't blame them. I would feel very uncomfortable in a situation like that. Something that should be a fun time has turned out to be a nightmare.

So... I get that you want to show your friends/couple all those cool games you play. But if you really want to play together... choose something where both of you are in the same conditions. Choose a simple game, preferably 2D, that controls with not many buttons and where the objective is clear and simple.

You don't need to know how to run to play Mario.  You don't need to drift to play Mario Kart.  The best games are easy to learn and difficult to master.  My daughter was playing NSMB when she was 3 and Mario Kart when she was 4.  These games really are made for everybody.

You can play MK8 in 50cc and you dont need to know how to drift at all to stay competitive.
And in due time, you can learn it. MK8 has a very simple learning curve.
I take it OP is not gonna completely demolish his wife while she learns a new game all the way down to the basics.

Super Mario 3D world

Based on the suggestions here I'm leaning towards Mario Kart with the driver assist turned on. I'm also considering one of the Jackbox Party games. Wario Ware Smooth Moves might be an option...if I didn't give it away. I'll try to track it down.

She really is bad at gaming. It's just not something she's ever been interested in but she does like being around me and we do enjoy playing the few games she can play, together. I'm tempted to teach her the basics starting with Feeding Frenzy and Super Rub a Dub!

Mario Galaxy might be an option as well.

My kids played Galaxy with me, when they were quite young.  Like 3/4 years old.  I think she could do it, the question being will she have fun.  Mario Party is probably as easy as it gets.  I got my wife into gaming, best thing I ever did.  We have spent hours playing Halo, Gears and Borderlands.

Mario 3D World - hear me out.

It might sound like a frustrating experience at first, but if you use the Infinite 1-Up trick at 1-2, you can get 1099 lives. Enough to goof around in a group.
