Sony is focusing on Hard-Core Gamers for PS5

Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony is focusing on Hard-Core Gamers for PS5

They seem to be taking a very literal approach to the WSJ article. It does say something about strengthening relationships with third party publishers, and then goes on about gamers buying consoles for graphically intense games not available on other platforms. But the next sentence references smartphones... so it's hard to tell if the WSJ article is talking about an actual real exclusive or just meaty graphical games like RDR2, which isn't available on smartphones.

Does anyone doubt Sony is looking to snatch up whatever timed exclusives or exclusive content they can? They're launching a new console in 2020, it makes sense. Microsoft is probably doing the same thing. Weren't a couple of their games showcased at E3 "play first on Xbox"? I don't think many people have problems with timed exclusive content. It's never bothered me or swayed my purchase decision until this gen. Last gen I still played most CoD games on PS3 because that's where most of my family and friends were online, so a 30 day wait for some map packs was nothing.

But this gen Sony really seemed to up the ante in terms of shitty practices when it came to this stuff. Destiny had timed exclusive content that could go over a year before showing up on other platforms. Hell, you could buy DLC for Destiny on Xbox/PC, pay the same price as PS4 users, and inside of your paid DLC you'd have time exclusive content you couldn't access for a year. Fucking disgusting. In this case I did vote with my wallet, never spent a penny on Destiny DLC and will never spend a penny on Destiny 2. SFV, huge SF fan, but there's zero reason to lock Xbox out of SFV, so no thanks, won't get any money from me.

Idc if they want to continue snatching up timed exclusive shit for PS5 but I hope it's dialed way back from what we saw this gen but I know that won't be the case because it would have to come from publishers, not Sony, and publishers love money too much to pass up essentially free money.

I don't get the part about relying less on indies. If anything as their first party output has slowed (which it has, pretty dramatically imho) they've relied more and more on smaller indie releases and exclusive content deals with outside companies. Look at PS+. It's relying more and more on smaller indie type titles, even after Sony stopped supporting Vita and PS3 with new PS+ games.

Personally the idea that Sony is going to rely less on smaller titles and more on tried and true big franchises for hardcore gamers is an idea I don't like and is an idea that is pretty funny considering that's the exact complaint many Sony fans here and elsewhere on the Internets have long had about Microsoft (Halo, Gears, Forza). Now we see Microsoft expanding their studio portfolio and branching out into many different areas and Sony pulling back on smaller less profitable titles and going all in on big name projects. It makes me think back to the PS2/3 days when they were pumping out some quality shit you were unaware of but became great titles. I guess this is just an extension of what we saw on PS4 though, less first party titles, bigger emphasis on timed exclusive content and paying companies like FS, Kojima, and Insomniac to make titles. Meh.

According to Sony itself, they are focusing on First party, Big budget, story based, PS exclusives.

The article that was cited here was based on a no-name source, who is said to be well informed. So basically pure hearsay. According to me, this article was written for two purposes:

1. To get clicks

2. To smear PS reputation and make it look like antigamer.

By the way, I know just one 3rd party game where Sony has had timed exclusivity, and that is Destiny. Considering that it was a new IP, and it has had several rough seasons, I would say Sonys commitment has probably helped to get Destiny over its crisis. Is that so anti consumer.

Any other 3rd party games with Sony exclusive content out there?

Well, the site AFAIK is a Playstation site, do I highly doubt they're trying to smear Playstation.

And uh, Destiny sold like hotcakes from day one and would have done just as well with zero exclusive content. In fact it might have done even better with no exclusive content because it was a game already light on content and any more strikes or maps or missions or weapons would have been more content to grind.

There are loads of multiplatform games with PS4 exclusive content and timed exclusive content. Most recently Red Dead 2, CTR, Call of Duty, among many others. Control is out in August and has PS4 content that has me probably passing on the game even though it's Remedy and looks like Quantum Break, which was amazing. And the upcoming Avengers game has PS4 content. I'm sure there are others, but I use my Scorpio for multiplatform games and rarely turn my Pro on so I don't keep up much with timed exclusive content for PS4.

There is an article on France, they said Sony will do exclusive games with their own studios as usual actually.

PS4 timed exclusives: Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy, Detroit: Become Human, Disgaea 5...

PS4 PSVR timed exclusives: Batman Arkham VR, Battlezone, Borderlands 2 VR, Moss, Polybius, Resident Evil 7 VR, REZ Infinite, Skyrim VR, Moss, Tethered,...

PS4/Vita timed exclusives: Danganronpa 1 - 3, Dragon Quest Builders, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD, World of Final Fantasy, Ys VIII...

PS4 (timed) exclusive DLC: Batman Arkham Knight, DLC: CoD Black Ops 4, CoD Modern Warfare (2019), Control, Destiny, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Red Dead Redemption 2, Slime Rancher, Watch_Dogs...

Well, I'm glad to hear they are focusing on the core market, the exact same thing they did with the PS4. No cable, big motion control focus, or always online garbage. I see PS5 is shaping up to be another PS success.

So arrogant Sony is indeed back. Was afraid of that

They plan to spend more money on their own games, and give you more AAA level games next gen than this current one.
They also plan to make more exclusive deals (possbility timed ones).

How is that arrogant?
If their gonna work harder to give value to their next console, than the PS4 currently has.
Iit just means PS5 will be swimming in fantastic games.

Arrogant sony would be investing less next gen, not more.

Eh, some people are praying for arrogant Sony to return cause that's the only way their console of choice has a shot at the top. Of course, sticking with x86, we're never going to have another PS3, with expensive custom chips and a format push. So, they can keep praying.

No surprise here, business is business and if one company doesn't do this, their competitors will.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. (Where our game is their game, but their game is business lol)

They invest more in first party and exclusive games for the hard core audience and you equate it to "arrogant Sony"? I'm sure you were really afraid if it lol

I don't think it is going to happen. Sony have focused very little in time exclusivity for full games. The very few they gone this way were games they helped to bring back.

I can't tell it from your comment but I guess you feel the same way about 3rd party exclusives (Titanfall, Dead Rising 3, Below, etc.), timed exclusives (PvZ: Garden Warfare, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Dead Rising 4, Black Desert Online, World of Tanks, etc.) and timed exclusive DLC (The Division, COD: Ghosts, COD: Advanced Warfare, Dragon Age: Inquisition, FIFA 14-16, etc.) on XB1?
