Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on why Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't on Switch

He's probably not wrong, although the situation might very well be different if Switch was more powerful. That is, this was a nice twist from him.

“For third-party, big or small, we want all that best content to come.”

That being said, when a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out, is that something you’re interested in having on the Switch?”

“Absolutely. We’d love for it to be there. But again — and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process — Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch. What happens moving forward? We’ll see. But that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform.”

Looks like Reggie ignored the big elephant in the room (hardware). "Are you joking?" would have been more fitting answer. But PR talk is PR talk, and Reggie knows his job.

Highly scaleable systems. That is what we have now. His statements on planning and actual dev time are 100% accurate.

We'll see if next big R* games come on Switch.

From today on, developers can finally develop for switch.

But wait, PS5 and Xbox2 is coming. New generation of improved games are coming.

Sorry, developers have no time for switch.

God bless You.

My Total Sales prediction for PS4 by the end of 2021: 110m+

When PS4 will hit 100m consoles sold: Before Christmas 2019

Well Reggie is right, I mean game was like 7 years in development, while completely different thing is that Rockstar wouldnt release RDR2 on Switch in any case.

Saying that, no one expecting RDR2 on Switch in any case, same couldn't be said for GTA V.

So the game was in development long before PS4 and X1 where announced and still launched on them, holy moses.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Pretty sure it started months after GTA V launched, I think Miyamotoo was just exaggerating.

Nope. The games will release on Switch only since those games where being developed while these consoles weren't release yet.

Some people (not sure if they have source for it) swear RDR2 started to be developed as soon as RDR1 released. So the 7 year or longer remark. Not sure if that is his case though.

Offtopic but is that game ever coming out? I thought it was just a scam at this point.

It certainly looks like a scam but even now there are still people who throw money at it and defend it to high hell, I'm afraid of writing this tbh in case another  rabidly descends on me, again.

By the time it comes out the graphics defended by PC elitist will have been surpased by consoles =p

Even if the game was cut to shreds to work on the Switch the resulting port would be so poor in comparison to PS4/Xbone that no one would want it and it would do damage to the Switch as a viable platform. Much better to keep to games that can achieve pretty much all the essential ingredients and benefit from portability. Such open world games have so much background processing to simulate the world, it's just not doable because of the Switch's limited cpu power and storage. Games that actually at the core have a simple engine but have fantastic detailed graphics are a much better option to move to Switch with reduced visual quality. Saying that I'd still like to see how RDR2 would run on Switch just out of curiosity.

This conversation seems to be taking place prior to Switch's existence. Why?

Why?  It's right there in the OP.

Oh, I see.
