Forums - Sony Discussion - Which developer should Sony acquire?

?

Platinum Games - Bayonetta 7 10.14%

From Software - Dark Souls, Bloodborne 19 27.54%

Codemasters - Grid, Dirt 1 1.45%

Kojima Productions - Death Stranding 20 28.99%

DontNod - Vampyr 0 0%

Others 14 20.29%

Multiple developers 8 11.59%

Total:69

If we're basing it off of past experience:

FromSoftware, due to exclusives like Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, and Deraciné.

Insomniac, due to exclusives like Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and Spider-Man.

Ready At Dawn, due to multiple PSP titles (two God of War titles and Daxter) and The Order: 1866.

Bluepoint Games, due to their works remastering Sony titles such as Shadow of the Colossus and Uncharted, the former's PS4 iteration exceeding the work of the already cult-classic original.

Clap Hanz, for their already strong involvement with Sony in the Everybody's Golf series.

Supermassive Games for their work on the Until Dawn series and their assistance with LittleBigPlanet titles.

Quantic Dream, due to having developed only PlayStation exclusives for multiple years with Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human.

I feel the only one here that should be controversial at all with be FromSoftware since they have regularly made multiplatform titles and their acquisition is not only unlikely, but would result in a massive PC gamer backlash for their loss of the Dark Souls development team to Sony.

Sony doesn't need to buy existing studios to stay/get in the lead, and this generation has been proof of it. Now I don't know if this kind of inaction will bite them in the ass in the future, but in my opinion it's best to nurture relationships with developers rather than buy them for bragging rights. So I don't think Sony needs to whip out the Onyx Black Sapphire Emerald Visa to go on a studio shopping spree.

Sony, buy IO Interactive. Hurry!

Would actually be a decent acquisition if Square Enix allowed Playstation to use the Hitman IP exclusively

From software belongs to Kadokawa. Sony will not be acquiring them in the foreseeable future as it makes no sense for Kadokawa to sell them off.

The rest are def all possible except RAD. That ship sailed after the poor critical and commercial reception to the Order. They would definitely have to work with Sony on something else before Sony looks to purchase them. So that will be many years out.

I'm aware they're owned by Kadokawa. Everything is for sale for the right price.

RAD is still up there with Devs who have a detailed history of working on Sony 1st Party titles.

EDIT:

Adding Kojima Productions to this list, due to Death Stranding's exclusive status and Sony working closely with them at present. I'm certain there's an acquisition deal on the table pending Death Stranding's commercial and critical success.

Supermassive games. Until dawn was amazing and I would love for them to keep making bigger and bigger games

From software, Sony Japan's output isnt good, they made 2 good games this gen with the last guardian and gravity rush 2, but they weren't system sellers or sold that much. Sony needs it's Japanese games to have a bigger presence, and adding from software will complement their first party a lot. It would finally give them a studio capable of making jrpgs with world wide appeal

+1

Sony and From Software also make a wonderful team. Demon's Souls and Bloodborne are the most charming games From Software has made.

I don't get how anyone can say Sony doesn't need more talent. The output of their first party studios this gen hasn't been all that incredible. A small handful of good games and a ton of 2nd party stuff they bought or paid others to make. No one would like another racing studio outside of Polyphony? Someone to make good RPG's? MicroSony are both sorely lacking in that area imho and rely pretty much entirely on other developers there.

But most importantly a majority of the good exclusives PS4 has had.. they came from developers Sony bought. Uncharted, LoU, Infamous, Horizon, etc. Personally I hope their output for PS5 is a lot stronger than PS4. They seemed pretty lazy in a lot of areas with PS4 after the competition pretty much imploded pre-launch. Not that I doubt either of the other two would have done the exact same thing, we've seen it with Wii and Kinect era 360 Microsoft.

I agree that Sony has been lacking this gen. PS3 had better exclusives.

I disagree that Nintendo doesn't have an exclusive problem. They do. They had a good year in 2014 and 2017, but the rest of this gen they have been subpar to atrocious, and even Microsoft has done better than them a few times though I know people here would deny it.

The games you mentioned are first party games so I don't see where you're going with this, Sony hasn't had an in house team make a game apart from Polyphony.

You don't want everyone to be able to play Atlus games outside of Sony? I don't think that would be good. Nintendo has a good relationship with Sega/Atlus. Supermassive and Insomniac make more sense. I know you said wishful thinking. Bayonetta wouldn't have anymore games if Sony acquired Sega. THAT would be bad.
