For me it was indeed the "playing itself" part and it also started the trend of you controlling only your party leader which I hate. The story was great and refreshing but the gameplay felt like walking my party from fight to fight.

But you don't control just your party leader, you control all three characters. You can only go to the menu and select commands for one character at a time, but that's no different from any other JRPG.
