Forums - Sony Discussion - Will PS5 offer 2nd screen/remote play?

Remote Play on PS5?

Only with Vita 2 10.53%

Portable like Switch 2 10.53%

Another hardware option 6 31.58%

None 7 36.84%

Since they are discontinuing the Vita (and remote play never worked that great for me anyway), I'm wondering if they'll have some way to compete against the Switch's ability to "play anywhere". I'm planning on buying Valkyrie Chronicles 4 on Switch simply because of that option, even though I'm more of a Sony fan. Would love to be able to play my "console" games anywhere in the house with no lag.

So what do you think?

I just want a traditional console to play games on my TV.

I could see a PlayStation app on tablets that would stream from the console. Prop it up and use a regular controller.

I'd be ok with that as long as the lag was near zero.

God I hope not. The PS5 needs to be more powerful than PS4 Pro by a sufficient margin. Packing all of that into something resembling a Switch, imo, just won't work. Especially not for the price point i'm sure we all expect the PS5 to be.

The alternatives, such as a separate piece of hardware that can also play PS5 games would just end up being the same dead end the PSV was. Although at least in that case the software would only have to target a single platform and the hardware could see limited production. Dedicated portable hardware that was just a streaming device would be even worse as it would suffer internet streaming lag.

A playstation app to run on phones and tablets would also suffer lag. Internet latency is still just too damn high.

I can see Sony adding peripherals to add extra game play feature like they've always been doing, but ultimately in the end, I think they'll stick with the core traditional consoles since they seem to be doing very well at it.

I can see it supporting remote play to PC and Laptops, and potentially a handheld like peripheral made exclusively for on the go remote play. This would not compromise the power of the PS5, it would be much cheaper than a full blown handheld as it would only need what would be required for streaming and it would build off of one of the VITA's best features.

No.

I think Sony's better off sticking to what has worked wonders for them and that's the dedicated console market while the dedicated handheld/now hybrid market goes to Nintendo.

Remote play will absolutely continue on PS5. Streaming in general will only expand next gen. The goal will be to get PS apps on as many smart, internet connected devices as possible. 5G and automated infotainment systems will make them that much more useful.
