Forums - Music Discussion - Why Didnt Anyone Tell Me About Prince?

Prince is like Magic Johnson to MJ's Michael Jordan. Still great, but not at that same level.

No way! Prince played like a gazillion different instruments, wrote and produced ALL of his music, ghost wrote for other artists, and could sing and perform on top of all that. MJ was great don't get me wrong but Prince had more talent in one finger than all of MJs body.

I grew up with his music back in 80s, tbh, never ever occurred to me to compare him with MJ, they were giving me completely different vibe.

How did this guy not reach MJ level popularity?

Because of MJ. He got overshadowed severely by how immensely popular MJ was.
If Michael wasn't a thing or lived in a different era, I think Prince would have been called the king of pop, back then.

I think there were other factors, Prince's way out there image turned people off IMO. Plus I don't think a lot of parents wanted their children listening to Prince back in the 80's. Would you let your 6 year old listen to "Darling Nikki"?

That's nice, but MJ was an immensely better performer, dancer and overall showman. Look at any of Mj's live performances and compare it to Prince. MJ created spectacle the kind no one else ever had. Sure prince can play a lot of instruments - but a lot of people can. MJ created the kind of live performances nobody else has come close to matching in terms of energy, spectacle and awe.

Performance is only one aspect of being an artist. IMO Prince checked more boxes on the criteria of being an all around artist.

He might have checked more boxes, but the boxes MJ checked were done to such a transcendent degree it overshadows the rest. It's like being a jack of all trades vs a master of (n)one. Prince did a lot of things really well, MJ did a few things the best it has ever been done before.

Sounds more like overt fandom than actual analysis

Not really. You can be great at many things, but I'll take someone that is the GOAT at one.

Yea, I never understood why he was always lauded as so talented when he didn’t write anything (he got a writing & producing credit when he added one of his signature grunts or ‘he he’s’) or produce any of his music.  He always had a producer, writer, and choreographer.  These are, in essence, the actual inventive talents.  MJ was just following orders.

Prince could write, produce, dance, and play every instrument known to man - he was a true gifted talent.

Nope, MJ pretty much wrote all his material up to the Bad album but then he got lazy and just had other people people write stuff for him.  I'm guessing his rapidly declining health probably had something to do with it also.

Other way around, Michael wrote more himself as he got older.

His last album that was released when he was still alive Invincible all the songs where co written with someone else.  I think Bad is easily his best album especially the special edition with the bonus tracks and on that album he pretty much wrote all the songs himself.
