Forums - Gaming Discussion - God of War is probably the best game of this generation so far

Unfortunately, because you didn't play Hellblade, that doesn't really make me feel better. Some people praised Hellblade's combat as well in very similar ways, and it was very not good. Knowing what I've played of Hellblade and how identical this looks to that, albeit way beefier, it's hard for me to be optimistic there.

I can say though that a lot of what I hated was how stiff Hellblade was because of the camera, and though I really don't like the camera in this game, at least it appears as though you can freely manipulate it during combat. I think the retractable axe gimmick looks interesting, as well.

You just gotta trust that after a certain point in the game the combat opens up to be much, much more than it is at the start. As one of the reviewers said "Kratos becomes a hurricane of death".

I'll try to be more optimistic, then! I should get it this week or next.

I played Hellblade too. And that game was such a borefest. It really doesn't compare to God of War.

God of War's battle gameplay keeps opening up as you progress, becoming better and more versatile. Just the base battle gameplay is already much better than Hellblade, and then it goes up from there.

That should tell you enough.

i like that... honeymoon period describes it perfectly.

it looks like an incredible game, but let’s be fair: depending on taste, there are many different games that could be “best game of the generation”. let’s just enjoy the games and understand differing opinions are a normality and should be cherished instead of attacked.

I agree so much with this. This site isn't an echo chamber like Resetera

Will obviously this is opinion based, The OP just wants to see how many people feel the same as him.

I think that when people come to talk about “game of the generation” than God Of War will have earned its place in the discussion. So much of what it does is in 10/10 territory that you have to say that it hits what it aims at. The voice acting and character design is phenomenal; the environmental puzzles are at least as good as any Tomb Raider; the combat is satisfying & (for me at least!) challenging. There are moments/sequences that are going to live in the memory.

That said, so far I respect the hell out of it but I don't yet love it. (I had the same problem with Horizon ZD) When people come to champion something for Game of the Generation they look for something above & beyond technical perfection.

There's no such thing as "the best game". Ask 10 random people what's the best game of n-th gen or of all times and most of them won't agree with each other. Even narrowing down to specific genres, doesn't guarantee consensus.

"One of the best games ..." is more appropriate expression.

Particle effects better in Horizon is false. If there is one thing GOW kills every game with its those particle effects. Infamous: Second Son has better particle effects than Horizon. God of War has the best of any game I've played. Character textures are better as well.

Do you play on OG PS4 or PS4 Pro? I've beaten Horizon twice on my Pro with a 4K HDR Sony Bravia, and currently playing God of War - and the particle effects are in Guerilla Games' favor. I'm not saying GOW's particle effects are  garbage, just that HZD's is better - especially when fighting Thunderjaws and Behemoths.

The ice particles in GOW are impressive though.

Hehe, my exaggerated "THAATTT" is a bit much. I do remember being the game really detailed, just don't remember it being to the level of humans being incomparable to GOW's. And sure, I'll check it out!

It really is THAAAAATH detailed. As the others mentioned you can see the world reflected in Aloys eye, every machine has purpose to the design, light retracts of surfaces multiple times, smiles avoid any uncanny issues, hair is detailed down to strands. GoW is grand and all but there was very few holy shit moments when it comes to the fine details....well many not until a photomode is introduced and we can go over it with a fine tooth comb.

There are some posts from Svennoj and some others that focus just on smiles of NPC's and other insane detail.

Yeah it kinda is. A moment that really shines is when she has Olin on the ground with a spear in his face. The facial intensity that Aloy displays at that segment would impress any special effects team in Hollywood, I wouldn't be surprised if they took notes.

Play Bloodborne and its DLC before making your final decision. Haven't played GoW yet.

What i love about GoW is the combat system. It is better than any system in a Souls games. This how melee combat should be. I liked Bloodborne a lot, played it a lot, i think i spend more time in the chalice dungeons than in the main campaign. But what i found kinda annoying about the combat, is this constant evasion and running away in circles.

Yesterday i fought the "Queen Bee". And what a glorious battle it was. Not constantly running in circles, but attacking, pushing, make him retreat. When i finally conquered him, i was sad. I didnt want it to end. I wanted to go again. After a bossfight in Bloodborne my dizzy mind usually is glad its over.

Hunting Season is done...

I completed it today. Best game of the gen so far for me. So epic.
