Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch-The platform of ports and shovelware

It seems like the Switch has become the platform of choice for not so old ports, a lot of them Wii U ports and shovel ware. Today in my Facebook feed I got blasted with announcements from Nintendo about Hyrule Warriors and DK Tropical Freeze not to mention the plethora of Wii U ports coming to the Switch. In addition to this, have you guys checked out the eshop lately? It is infested with shovel ware. I think this is not a good path for the Switch but, whatever, people seem to like to buy the same games over and over and over and over...

The only difference between the Switch and the first two years of other platforms is that the Switch also has top-tier new exclusive releases.

Remember all of the 360/PS3 ports the PS4/XBO got their first year?

As for the existence of shovel-ware, that usually correlates with a successful platform because it means there is an active enough install base that any game (no matter how bad it is) can reap profits. Other platforms with a lot of shovel-ware were the PS1, PS2, 360, PC, GBA, DS, 3DS, and Wii. All of these were successful.

So sure, the Switch might be (like most platforms) a platform with shovel-ware and ports, but that isn't ALL  it is. One can easily look at a Metacritic list to see this. For a platform that isn't even a year old its library is impressive.

I get that you're not happy with all the ports, but what shovelware are you talking about?

What?

The Switch had the 2 best games of 2017 as exclusives, and many other great games as well.  It would be hard to say which system had the better lineup between the Switch and the PS4.

Some people will never be happy I guess.

I kinda understand getting disapointed for the amount of ports, I mean, if you are a Wii U owner that already own these games, but shovelware? Honestly, comparing with the digital-only library of Wii and Wii U and of a few other consoles,I would say Nintendo is doing a fine job at keeping shovelware away from the console so far.

Good time to bring up that the best selling PS4 game is a port of the best selling PS3 game. This is just the nature of the business these days I guess.

The Switch is getting a lot of ports. But it also launched with a brand new Zelda and got a brand new Mario a few months later. Both were GOTY contenders. We got a 100 hour JRP last month. The Switch is fine.

Good to see ports and remasters have joined DLC on the accepted list. Next up, paying for online.

Switch had 45 games last year that scored over 80% on metacritic (in a period of 10 months). PS4 had 42 titles for all of 2014.

Just to put things into perspective here.

Exactly. To expand on this point:

PS4’s line-up was also LOADED with remasters and cross-gen games in it’s first year. It didn’t really have a steady stream of exclusives until 2016. I bring the PS4 to make the point that this is pretty common for consoles these days. Both PS4 and Xbox One received loads of remasters, ports, and shovel ware in their first year. When it comes to portables, this trend goes back well over a decade with the GBA and the DS.

Ports are quick, and porting quality titles early in a console’s lifespan is easy money.

But really, compared to its contemporaries, the Switch is doing rather well. Let’s look at it’s first year line-up of exclusives:

Snipper Clips, Arms, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2. Nearly all of these games were great, one was a game of the year contender. The upcoming Kirby game is missing the year one window by a matter of weeks.

Meanwhile...what did PS4 have? Knack, a supremely mediocre platformer. Killzone Shadowfall, a good but unmemorable FPS. LittleBigPlanet 3 and Drive Club, two games I haven’t played but I know didn’t do well with critics or fans. Really, out of PS4’s entire year one line up, the only exclusive I loved (and that reviewed well, for that matter) was Infamous: Second Son. And even that, I’d argue, wasn’t nearly as good as Super Mario Odyssey.

PS4’s year one line-up was mostly filled out with cross-gen multiplatform games, remastered ports, and loads of indie titles. It’s second year wasn’t really that much better. It wasn’t until 2015 that we started getting stuff like Bloodborne and Until Dawn.

Making games takes time. There are loads of great Wii U games people haven’t played, and loads of other games that would make for great portable (or TV if they were portable) experiences. So I’d consider these ports to be a net positive. But even by measure of purely exclusive titles, Switch has probably had the best line up of any console in YEARS. Certainly the best of this generation.

I've never seen what's wrong with ports. Games should be on as many platforms as possible. DLC can be good, bad, or neutral. Nintendo has never done bad DLC IMO.

Paid online is yet-to-be-seen.

I've been buying ports on Xbox One and Ps4 for years now. All of a sudden Switch is king of ports?

I guess maybe yes. It has the best ports... Nintendo games!!! King of ports it is!!!

There is nuance with everything.

It is possible to hold the position that ports and remasters aren't enough when there isn't a steady stream of new releases that take advantage of the platform, while simultaneously holding the position that they are okay if there are enough new releases to satisfy those who've already played said games. The value (or dis-value) of the ports depend significantly on the greater library.

The difference between the Wii U and Switch are clear examples of this distinction. The Wii U had a few okay exclusives/new games and a bunch of PS360 ports in its early years. As it aged, the ports stopped coming but the new games were still scarce. In comparison, the Switch had many Wii U/PS360/PS4XBO/Mobile ports but also quite a few decent to excellent new quality exclusives: Arms, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Fire Emblem Warriors in less than a year. There are also quite a few exclusives to expect in the near future. If all the Switch had were ports, I'd certainly find them to be unacceptable.

Likewise, with say -- free DLC or paid DLC that adds something new to the original game without feeling like a pay wall vs. micro-transactions or paid DLC that segments what should've been in the original game there is nuance.
