Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch VS others console - first 3 quarter shipments

Will be a very interesting comparison next quarter

3DS-15.03 million
PS4-13.50 million
Wii-13.17 million

Nintendo is expecting 16.74 million shipped by March 31, 2018 so roughly ~14 million by the end of 2017.

It should beat PS4/Wii after 4 quarters but may fall short of 3DS unless they beat their current forcast.

Which is very likely, imo.

Honestly i predicted 15 million by the end of 2017, so i think is gonna be super close.

The fact that it accomplished this without the holiday season and stock problems is amazing. I thought these shipping increases were insane but by this data it seems pretty justified.

GBA is also ahead.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Sony could release the PS5 in July and it would still sell 2 million units in its first week if they produce enough units (provided there is some sort of killer game). The launch of a new (popular) console is such a big event that they will almost always know shortages at the start of each gen. The reason why Sony and MS usually launch consoles during the holidays is the same reason why they have extensive contact with third parties about launching a new console. If a playstation launches during the holidays it doesn't need to launch with a big exclusive and has a decent library within 2 months from its launch.

You literally missed the entire point of my comment and I don't know how.

But you are right.

The point is that there is no difference between a holiday launch or not since there will always be shortages, unless a console maker seriously fucks up. Hell the Switch shortages are so bad that in some countries people can only buy a Switch after these holidays are one. If one thing its better to release a console outside of the holiday season since you can throw some sweet deals in at the first holiday season. People that usually buy consoles at launch are either game or techfanatics and not the ordinairy Joe and Ellie that usually buy consoles during the holidays as presents. Those consumers usually wait a year until there are way better deals than during the launch of a new console. PS4 took some time to really pick up steam because of that. Sony didn´t manage to sell even 15 million consoles in 2014. In the end it barely matters when you release a console, because people who want your console at launch will buy it regardless and thats usually when they are in stock.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

3 quarter is 9 month.

March ~ September is 7 month.

Even though technically its 7months and 3 quarters is 9months, it launched in March so that month counts in the Jan-Mar quarter

Jan-March Q1

Apr-June Q2

July-Sept Q3

Nice it will be interesting to see data after holiday season and first 4 quarters. :)

We'll get a better picture once the Switch has had a FULL year out there, this might not mean much but Switch still has 4 more months to cover a year.

2 of those 4 months are biggest of the year. It means a lot.
