Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Oceanhorn sold more copies on Switch than on all other consoles combined

It seems like Wonder Boy wasn’t the only indie game that saw a lot of success on Switch

Lack of Virtual Console on Switch is paying off for Nintendo in the short term.

Who would have thought? Maybe... Maybe they're holding it off because they saw it hurted indies sales? Could it be?

@OP: This is indeed excellent news. I was afraid of indies' performance on Switch. Glad it is working out for a lot of them, means more for us!

🤔

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

90m X1's and PS4's... not to mention the PC, but games are selling more on a System with 5million users?
I'm confused as to how this can be true.

Really high attach rates for indies on Switch and the fact there's a ton of other games on the other systems.

This is great news. Indies will surely bet hard for the Switch in the long run.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I think the handheld part is what attracts players to play indie games on NSW. Console boots up fast, so you can play small games that you can turn off at any time and bring with you anywhere. Just like mobile.

That's possible. In the same way it's possible that there is no Switch Sports game because Nintendo makes a conscious attempt to dodge the prejudice of third parties, having the "right" games sell early.

The alternatives in both instances are lack of interest on Nintendo's part or incompetence on Nintendo's part.

I might be inclined to say both when it comes to Nintendo. But mostly, their incompetence is working out this time around.

I wish I could be successful in my incompetence.

True. Who in their right mind would own both a PS4 / Xbone and a Switch and not get the latter version of an Indie title?

I see, people still have a hard time to believe or accept that Nintendo has a coherent strategy. It's as if the previous generation erased all the memories of Nintendo's successful systems that came before. Nintendo succeeds more often in this business than they fail.

Of course I can't say for sure that the lack of Virtual Console is deliberate, but this generation it isn't farfetched that Nintendo actually knows what they are doing. There have been a few hiccups like underestimating Switch demand and severely underpricing the NES Classic and SNES Classic, but on the flipside all three of the aforementioned systems are products that the market welcomed with open arms, unlike what we've seen last generation.

I was joking around. I know that Nintendo know their shit. I genuinely believe they have a coherent strategy that paid off real good.

Fix that sarcasm detector of yours

I'm not saying you're wrong in the slightest, I've even picked up a few titles like "I am Setsuna, Snakepass, tumbleseed and graceful explosion machine" on the Switch for far more than the PS4 title would have cost me, just so I could play it on a plane trip.

I happily pay that extra amount for what I know to be a slightly lesser visual presentation of the game... in the trade off for being able to put it in my pocket and go out the door with the machine...

Still though if you were to estimate that there's 110m indie capable PC's in the world would mean that the Switch is tasked with selling more games with 5m compared to 200m (110mPCs+Consoles) would mean the purchase rate has to be 40x higher on the Switch than on the other platforms.

Fantastic stuff for all involved of course.
