Forums - Nintendo Discussion - EA on why FIFA 18 isn’t using Frostbite on Switch, will be better than last-gen version

So... it's the best last gen version? EA is so kind. :p

I am very impressed by the Switch , its basically a significantly more powerful Xbox 360/Ps3/wii-u but that is also a Handheld console. A HANDHELD!!!
I might buy the Fifa game only because I noticed that I play way more on my Switch than I have on any other Console or my Gaming PC.

That's the thing with the switch isn't it? You can look at it from 2 angles, none of them truer than the other. It's a powerful handheld and it's an underpowered home console.

i don't get it. If the game was not on switch people would complain, the game comes to switch people complain as well...

Besides, who is going to buy it for switch anyway? Isn't the targeted customer different for each of the two things (Fifa vs Nintendo hw)?

Just lock that 60, EA.

I don't see why people are complaining. Engines are just tools. They used the best tool to create the most polished experience they could considering all other factors (cost, time, hardware capabilities, etc.) There are always trade-offs, and it doesn't seem to me like this is a weak effort.

People are upset because they feel Switch should be getting an experience at par with X1 and PS4.

I think its certainly possible to get Frostbite on Switch and create a more feature complete version of Fifa 18 on Switch. That's based on the great ports of BF on 7th gen consoles.

Frankly, if I was a Fifa fan I would just buy it on X1 or PS4. But if all you have is Switch, PS3, or 360. Then settle with what you get, maybe wait for a price cut, or don't play it all. Its really that simple.

Frankly, Switch owners should be glad when they get significant 3rd party games. Because there isn't much happening at the moment.

“If you put the two together you won’t recognise them. When you dock it (and connect to the TV), it’s 1080p and 60 frames per second – Gen 3 (PS3 / Xbox 360) never run on this. We’re also using physics based rendering, another thing that Gen 3 did not have. We’re even putting ICONS in Ultimate Team – Gen 3 won’t have these either.”

I like how EA apparently thinks that gaming has begun with the Playstation and everything that came before doesn't exist.

Yeah I caught that "Gen 3" nonsense as well. It's kinda embarrassing that even industry reps use objectively incorrect terminology.

Having said that, it's good to hear that they're leveraging the Switch's power advantage over PS3/360 instead of just doing a lazy port.

I don't expect PS4 and Xbone level stuff.  I want a real, logical explanation.  As pointed out, the current version of Frostbite was designed with the PS360 in mind, it's highly unlikely they couldn't scale it back to a more powerful system with significantly more RAM and superior architecture.  And I don't buy this custom engine line.  I would bet money it's the same situation as the Creation Engine:  it's just a modified version of what they had before.  And to say they didn't want the Switch to have a poor man's version while making the Switch version feature stripped is just plain contemptuous that they think people are that ignorant.  I hope the game as it is is good, but this PR is BS, pure and simple.

Well here's a question, why haven't Fifa games used Frostbite on 7th gen? Doesen't that seem odd considering this engine is designed to work on 7th gen?

I think the reality is the Switch version they're going with was easier to produce and worked well with those specs. I mean this is a 60 fps/1080p Switch game. How would a Frostbite Fifa would handle on the Switch? We don't know because it wasn't even done on 7th gen.

If 60 fps is important to fans, then Frostbite might struggle to achieve that on Switch.

"You’re getting a shitty, second-rate game" - EA Representative on FIFA for Switch

Comment shamelessly stolen from EXY on Gonintendo

If they didn't put it on Switch then you guys would complain. They put it on Switch and you guys complain. Companies aren't purposely trying to lose money. The Switch audience isn't a target audience anyways. It'd be dumb to put maixum effort and resources into something where you won't get your return. They'll put a half decent port and like Street Fighter Switch owners will still buy it lol. Of course PlayStation is their main focus. That's where these companies are making the most money. No one buys a Switch to play third party games
