If you want to hide the threads you don't like, you can install the browser userscript I made a good while ago. You'll probably need Greasemonkey, Tampermonkey, or some other userscript addon for your browser though. Anyway, the script is here, and you install it by clicking on the button that says 'Raw'.

Congrats, now the topics you hate are now filtered, and wont show up again on your hot topics section.

As far as I know, people are mainly complaining about seeing uninteresting topics on the front page of the whole site, not the front page of the forums. Your setting doesn't help with that.
