Forums - Politics Discussion - Prosecutors in UK fighting to bring as much as life sentence to acid attackers

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/thugs-who-throw-acid-can-now-be-given-life-in-jail-even-if-they-miss-their-target-a3603936.html

Tl;dr

After a worrying rise in acid attacks in the UK, there has been demand for a harsher punishment to those who use acid as a means to harm others.

As a result, the current punishment of up to four years is seeing an increase in severity. With the new changes taking place, one can receive as much as a life sentence for being responsible for an acid attack. Additionally, prosecutors state that those who miss their target should be prosecuted similarly to successful criminals.

With the announcement coming during the same period as a man attacked a senior with acid, citizens (along with the police) hope these new policies will decrease the attacks.

Opinion:

Personally, I believe this is a smart decision. There is generally no reason to carry acidic substances strong enough to burn people's skin alive. Victims of acid attacks must suffer physical and psychological damage as they go through many types of pain.

I don't see much disagreement coming from this. With the offense being comparable to torture, we can finally have the terrible people who commit these acts behind bars (or not attempting to do an attack in fear of the punishment). With most offenders being criminals or extremists of any sort, I believe the UK has made a smart decision.

(No trolling please. Also, tell me if you think I can improve my tl;dr)

Idk a life sentence seems like too much.

Prosecutors are now given as much power as they believe is needed. If they believe it's X amount of years and the judge agrees, then they'll pay the punishment.

Acid attacks never end well and cause severe damage. Depending on what type of acid is used, its effects can be more harmful than that of a knife attack or even a gun in some instances. To make it worse, they're usually attacked by the face and must deal with the look for the rest of their lives, something which can probably create a large amount of mental problems.

Seems fine to me. I would have personally set a mandatory death penalty in there for anyone who throws acid at a child younger than 10, though.

Good, anybody who does something so horrific deserves to rot in a prison their whole life.

For those who don't agree I recommend looking at pictures of victims from such attacks. They are so horrible I am not going to embed them, but please click away.

These scum give their victims life sentences, so they should get the same treatment. In a less civilized country and time I am sure their punishment would be to have the same done to them. But fortunately in the modern developed world there are standards.

A person who feels the need to attack a young person with acid has no sense of morality. An attack on a minor should honestly be a guaranteed life sentence

Wait, these people literally through acid that can burn someones skin off onto people? I'm confused

Life sentence or death is suitable in my opinion to the people who commit this kind of act because they're attacking someone with acid with the intention to permanently disfigure the victim because they were pretty or some other crazy insignificant reason. It's vile and intolerable behaviour that should be put a stop in any means. The victims often are disabled because they go blind or partially blind or can't do things with their hands. Acid attack wounds also very expensive to treat and they'll have to get repeated surgies to help with it. It's also in alot of ways a fate worse than death.

Why not just a death sentence? I doubt we need sociopaths in our society.

Yeah, I am very much opposed to the death penalty because I think it can be abused to harm disadvantaged groups and there is always the chance that somebody is innocent, but it would be hard to argue against killing somebody who does something like this with solid (video or hundreds of witnesses) evidence of their guilt, ideally in a horrific way such as pouring acid on them.
