Forums - Movies & TV - I really wanna see Valerian and the city of a thousand planets but critics have ruined it for me

You literally play every crappy WiiU game like it's nothing, yet you blame critics for not watching a movie? You've got it really backwards, man. Gaming reviews tend to be pretty spot on...movies not so much.

Anyone who uses movie reviews for movie quality isn't typically the brightest bulb. The movie critic industry is an absolute joke and anyone who does it professionally is wasting their life away being useless.

Critics for movies are the most hyperbolic fucking crybabies in the world. They say something is either "amazing!" or "worst thing ever". Words like best and worst have lost meaning because of their overuse. Similar to how "Breaking News" in the news industry is rarely anything of importance because it can range from North Korea nuking South Korea to Kim Kardashian taking a shit at a public toilet.

The only reason to watch/read a movie review is to get an idea of what a movie is like, but even then that is limiting because you have to find a reviewer who has tastes similar to yourself. It's an annoying process. But yeah, idk, for me, judge for yourself if a movie is good or bad, movie reviewers are shit

Saw interested until I saw the last trailer and that is when I decided not to watch it XD

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

First trailer was visually interesting, but the second trailer when people started actually talking blew that whole mystique. I'll still watch it because I like sci-fi and it looks visually appealing, but I'm not anticipating a very good movie.

Can't be worse than Transformers 5.

Never heard of either. Why give a shit what others say anway? That's letting other people choose for you. Make up your own mind. I know what I like and want. I never pay any attention to reviews on anything nor care what they say. It's dumb to let others decide for you.

Well I missed out on Valerian due to times being wrong, so I trusted what everyone had to say and saw Dunkirk.

I made up my mind based off trailers and Critics, best of both worlds and still lost. What a crappy movie. Sometimes there is no winning.

If you want to see something then do it. Stop giving a shit and stop reading what other people think. You decide if you like it or not. It's really simple.  I have liked many films critics hated. 25 years later I found out critics hated Hook. Don't care still love it. Some films critics hated which are now  considered some of the best films ever made. It's a Wonderful life and the 1982 remake of The Thing from John Carpenter.  Physco bad reviews.  Pretty Woman bad reviews. Caddyshack bad reviews. Fight Club bad reviews.  The Shining bad reviews. Predator bad reviews. Alien bad reviews. All these films are considered great movies today.  A lot of critics are snobs. Fuck em. Watch what you want.

Why do you obsess over critics so much? Literally every website has critics and fan reviews. Rotten tomatoes, metacritic, etc.

Because most want movies they really excited for to get good reviews.  This movie has not.

Except that the majority of reviewers recommend that you go watch the movie. 55% in fact.

I say go see the movie for yourself, op. I've enjoyed plenty of movies with mediocre reviews and disliked a good many with sterling reviews. Their taste and yours aren't always going to match.

I saw it just before the Rotten Tomatoes score tanked. It is a very beautiful movie with characters that constantly walk the line between stilted and insufferable, and dialogue that ranges from mediocre to downright bad.

By far the best reason to see this movie is its visuals. It's filled with awesome alien designs and cool locations, including an entire massive shopping mall in a seperate dimension. If cool visuals are all you need, then go see it, otherwise you needn't bother. It's pretty mediocre on the whole.

I want to see it as well, but I had suspicions that it would be bad from the trailer.

Valerian & Laureline is my most favorite scifi comic book series. Fell in love with it (and Laureline, the best scifi character) 3 decades ago.

Background of this series which is 10 years older than Star Wars: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valérian_and_Laureline

Although he'd never admit it, George Lucas was strongly influenced by Valerian & Laureline:

I'm gonna watch the movie though I think Luc Besson chose the wrong actors.
