Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch has sold over a million units in Japan

What really surprises me is that the Dreamcast made it to a million more quickly than the PS4 did!

Around the Network

Quite a bit slow, compared to other consoles in the past, though I figure the time duration would have been shorter if they properly stocked it. I'm more eager to see how it'll sell in the long run.

Wii was never that big of a success in Japan as it was in the West.

Wii is not even one of the 5 best selling Nintendo systems in Japan and it got outsold by the Sony PSP.

Wii took 6 weeks? What in the hell took it so long? And I have a hard time believing it took PS4 49 weeks to cross a million in Japan. That legit shocked me.

It took around 11 months for PS4 to hit 1m.

Stock issues.  Same reason PS4 had some hiccups early on.  Console manufacturers are generally more conservative than people think, except for Microsoft.  They manufacture around what they feel is a healthy launch quantity and adjust as necessary.  Attempting to immediately stuff the channels can backfire spectacularly if the device fails to catch on.

And with the Wii, Nintendo was extra cautious cause they just came off the GameCube.

Similar thing now with the Switch, but unlike the Wii, they are having a hard time upping production due to the NAND component shortage that set in early this year.

True, but Switch stocks problems are much bigger than they were for Wii in same time.

That was my point.  Immediately following launch, the Wii was hit with very heavy shortages but Nintendo immediately set about increasing shipments drastically.  The Switch had a similar issue, but they weren't able to respond in the same way.

You totally forgot to include MS series of Xboxes in your race to million figures...you can edit your figure later.   Maybe 2050 when Xbox Negative 063 TWO GT ProU releases, they will get there combined...

Should've gotten there a lot sooner, but oh well. Better late than never I guess.

Has there really never been an xbox system to make the 1m units mark in Japan? not even the X360 with it's JRPGs? I have to admit, that is pretty sad to see a nation so against what was a quality product like that primarily because of where it comes from, X360 deserved more respect than that.

On topic though, the Switch is a beast, just an absolutely great machine and I hope Nintendo sort their supply issues ASAP because it deserves to be selling more as there is literally people doing raffles for the chance of getting to buy one.

360 did break 1m. It was at 1,641,528 as of February 2014 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-02-26-wii-u-has-finally-overtaken-xbox-360-in-japan

Edit: And I don't think blaming it's poor sales on it not being a Japanese console is entirely fair. That PS4 vs Xbox One TGS video comes to mind where they ask a little kid which one he wants and he's like "WTF is an Xbox?". I think it's more likely that people don't know what it is or why they should care about it rather than they think "eww, filthy American console"

Yeah I guess there are failings on both sides of the Xbox in Jap but it's cool to know that the X360 broke the 1m mark there thanks :) like I said I think that's one of my top 3 fav systems of all times, could be in the top 2... or 1 even.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Twice as fast as the Wii U, so that's really good. Makes me wonder how different (or not) the numbers would be without shortages..

The gap is shrinking..... 3.8m more to go.

Don't do this to yourself. Switch is tracking well ahead of it. Actually, it took 49 weeks for PS4 to cross 1m. lol

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

If you from launch having sold out evre shipment you have in about 10 min. evre week, of course that sales numbers would be quite higher without those shortages. My guess would be that Switch could be closer to 1.5m instead 1m curently.
