Forums - Sales Discussion - A little milestone that people have not noticed - the PS4 has outsold the NES

$60 is a very enticing price.

And a £200 PS4 would have been about £75 thirty years ago. Full price games today are only £15 compared to 1987's £40. Take into account the increase in average wage and gaming's never been cheaper.

But wages have stagnated, so that doesn't show the whole picture.

The nintnedo wii reaching the ps1's lifetime sales was enough of a milestone for nintnedo. They haven't set the bar since the early 90s. It's Microsoft who has to one day sell 100 million. If they keep following sonys trends and keep competitive they just might do it.

Some of the logic in this thread... if it's not impressive for the PS4 to be selling 60 million+ units in less than 4 years, and that what would equally impressive is selling about five times what it actually has, then these people must be demanding mass seppuku by the heads of Nintendo for the sales of the Wii U since in their minds it's sold about 3 million units total in five years.

Makes zero sense.

When you consider the market difference between 1985 and 2013, it's not really that impressive. It's like comparing revenue for movies and not adjusting for inflation. The NES selling 60 million units in the climate it launched in is like the PS4 selling 300 million units.

That's some donwplaying, isn't it? The market was dead, but in compensation the competition was zero. Nintendo had a great capacity of reigniting the market, but it wasn't a "miracle" or something. People went to computers because Atari became low quality and computers could do more. But these same computers were expensive, underpowered, had terrible games and were hard to use, so people ended up returning to consoles as soon as Ninty introduced a good one.

PS4 is competing with Nintendo (that actually sent 2 different consoles to the fight) and with MS, a gargantuan competitor. Really, when can you say it's easy to compete when the 3rd largest corporation in the world is fighting with you? Also mind that PCs are another competitor (NES-era computers demanded quite a bit of technical knowledge just to launch the freaking game) and smartphones/tablets also do exist.

With the same logic, we could also invalidade any numbers of the SNES since competing exclusively with Sega (which I love) was easy because the latter messed up all the time. The only time Nintendo really destroyed the competition was with the Wii and even then they weren't able to secure a PS2 or 1 domination. They beat up Sega several times, but, as much as I freaking love Sega, I recon that they were never competitive at all. The closest they got was with the Genesis, but they actually were capable of losing even with a full 2-year advantage. Nintendo tried to play that "wait and see" card with Sony and we all know how it ended up.

Am I the only one who thinks it's kinda funny that in the period leading up to PS4 outselling the NES, the only console that managed to match/surpass PS4 sales was.......the NES?

It's odd that someone that prefers to look at revenue on the UK Sales Charts (because Nintendo are ahead in that but not units sold) now chooses to look at units sold for the $60 Nes Classic against the $250 PS4.

But no, the Nes Classic in no way matches or surpassed the ps4 in sales unless you're referring to a very specific time frame and region, i.e the April NPD.

For the time perdiod Nes Classic was on the market:

Nes Classic - 2.3m
PS4 - 10.6m (VGC Figures)

Not to mention that the Nes Classic offers no further revenue opportunities, you can't buy software/services for it. So it's a completely pointless to even bring up the Nes Classic, meaningless post. They're not comparable products.

I think the ps4 will be the second best selling console of all time after the ps4

I think Switch will outsell both of them combined.

So, is that 60.4 million, or 120.8 million?

No he thinks it'll outsell the two best selling consoles of all time combined. PS2+PS4.

If it was anyone else I'd say he wasn't being serious.

Read the previous post. It said PS4 will be second best selling after PS4.

If we count Switch as 2 consoles (handheld/home) then it probably will.
