Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whose in the trickier position: Nintendo or Xbox?

Sony they are in so much debt while MS and Nintendo can screw up a gen without major problems. If the PS5 however dies screw up Sony is in real trouble unlike MS or Nintendo. A lesser gen or even a failed gen for MS or Nintendo as a company is a bump in the road. For Sony it's like driving off a cliff. So Sony's position is the trickier since fuckint up the  PS5 like they did with PS3, might be the end of Sony as we know it.

Nintendo can do it's own thing and be fine and MS can become a software company for W10 devices and be fine I don't think those are in trouble. Xbox might stop existing after the Xone is discontinued. The big question however remains whether there is a market for homeconsoles after the PS4 and how long that market remains big enough for the existence of a Playstation homeconsole.

People forget that even if the Xbox magically stopped selling any units, Microsoft will live. Heck, they will probably find something else to make money off.

Nintendo is slowly spreading out, and they basically have an iron grip over the handheld market. Even if they were to magically flop out of nowhere, they can still make games.

Sony is done with the handheld market after embarassing themselves with the Vita. However, we've seen what happens when their consoles aren't doing perfectly fine. They lost billions with the PS3, and they can't afford to have the PS5 do anything less than stellar. Their smartphone and movie departments aren't exactly doing amazing either.

It's kind of curious, because the title pits a company against a console brand, instead of say, Nintendo vs Microsoft, or Switch vs Xbox. But if you do it the way that it's currently worded, I think that Nintendo's in a better position than the Xbox division is, because the profit's higher, and the long-term viability is bigger, too.

This generation is easily the worst for Xbox in many ways. It's on track to sell around 60 million consoles. The WiiU still hasn't even managed 15 million yet they've managed to turn it around with the Switch.

I know it's easy to just jump on the bandwagon and press the emergency button but please.... Just... think about it.

Xbox is certainly in a worse position though. The biggest difference being the Switch.

Is it?  Even if it stays relatively flat YOY, and only drops another 4% like last year, it would be at ~35.9M, according to VGC.  Then, we enter 2018, where it'll continue having an exclusive drought.  If it falls 4%, again, that puts it at ~43.6M.  Then, we are into 2019, when, most likely, we are going to be getting a PS5 announcement.  Sales are going to drop quite a bit at that point.  Personally, I don't see it only being down by just 4% in 2018, either.  In the end, I see it maybe hitting 50M, with a possibility of it being lower.

Now, that might not seem so bad, but the problem is what it cost to even get to that 50M.  Most of those sales came from firesale after firesale, at a point when MS was losing money on every XBO sold.  There's a reason MS is cutting the budget on the Xbox division, while focusing on PC more.  And it doesn't have anything to do with selling only 1/2 of the PS4.  I has to do with selling 1/2 as much as the PS4, but at a loss.

I think the Switch is fine: it's current selling decently at a $400 price point! And here I thought $300 was asking too much for the device.

It's a nice device by the way. As an owner, it certainly feels like a $300 device.

Is this a serious question??? Come on really??
Are some of you really that out of touch?

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Microsoft is in the trickier position. Not because of Sony, because of PC.

Nobody has a reason to buy XBOX when every single game is on PC. At least Nintendo has enough exclusive content that, if you hold off for three years, will be enough to warrant a Switch purchase. As long as you have a decent PC, you have no reason to buy XBOX. Microsoft needs XBOX exclusive games and in a hurry.

A main line pokemon game will guarentee the Switch's future, the thing will sell like hot cakes

As for XBox, as long as it's profitable and helps keep gaming close to PC gaming where Windows dominates over Mac and Linux, I don't see it going anywhere.

Well, Nintendo currently has the best selling console on the market. How tricky can that position be?
